- CUPRA Born eclipses 1,000 sales in Australia in less than a year
- Born VZ hot hatch expected for Australia
- Born takes a starring role in Football Australia re-signing event
Sydney, 14-03-2024 – Fresh from achieving its 5,000th overall sale in Australia, CUPRA Australia has today announced its first fully-electric vehicle, the CUPRA Born, has now sold in excess of 1,000 units locally. To commemorate the milestone, CUPRA Australia has revealed the newly announced, even hotter Born VZ is expected to arrive in Australia in early 2025.
CUPRA Australia Director, Ben Wilks, said the milestone demonstrates Australia's willingness to embrace both new technology and a new challenger brand.
‘CUPRA is a growing brand with no ambition to be a volume player – loved by a few rather than liked by many is our mantra. CUPRA's journey in this country to date proves that Australians have a taste for the new and the progressive, especially in the form of a brand that emphasises design and driving dynamics,' said Wilks.
The Born is CUPRA's newest model and the first battery-electric vehicle (BEV) in its line-up. Offering European styling, electrifying performance and a dynamic driving experience at $59,990 (plus on-road costs), the Born's 77 kWh battery can take the car up to 511km while delivering 170KW (231PS) and 310Nm of torque – comparable to a more traditional turbo petrol hatchback1.
The Born range is expected to expand in Australia in 2025 with the introduction of the Born VZ. Denoting “veloz” or “speed” in Spanish, the Born VZ delivers greater performance (240kW/545Nm, reaching 100km/h in just 5.7 seconds), a sportier interior, improved driving dynamics and several eye-catching exterior upgrades.
‘With equivalently priced performance hatchbacks in BEV, PHEV and internal combustion engine form, we're welcoming the New Vehicle Efficiency Standard and continuing on our journey to become the first Volkswagen Group Australia brand to electrify all models. Of course, that doesn't mean sacrificing the performance and handling that have come to define CUPRA,' said Wilks.
Following the recent extension of CUPRA Australia's partnership with Football Australia, a CUPRA Born, emblazoned with ‘Born Proud' messaging, took a starring role at the 2024 Mardi Gras parade.
CUPRA is the unconventional challenger brand that brings together emotion, electrification, and performance to inspire the world from Barcelona. Launched in 2018, CUPRA has become one of Europe's fastest growing car brands and has a global network of specialised points of sale.
CUPRA proves that electrification and sportiness are a perfect match, and in 2023 the brand hit new heights with more than 230,000 vehicles delivered. Each successive launch of a model has marked a new milestone in defining the brand's character, with a challenging and original design: the CUPRA Ateca, a unique model in its segment; the CUPRA Leon, its first electrified model thanks to a plug-in hybrid electric engine; the CUPRA Formentor, the first model to be developed exclusively by the brand and the company's best-selling vehicle to date; and the CUPRA Born, the brand's first 100% electric vehicle.
CUPRA is FC Barcelona's official automotive and mobility partner, the World Padel Tour's premium sponsor and the official sponsor of the eSports Club Finetwork KOI. CUPRA is also proud to participate in the Formula E racing competition. The CUPRA Tribe is made up of a team of ambassadors who want to be the driving force of change. Its members include Oscar nominated film director J.A. Bayona, Formula E driver Lucas Di Grassi, Street Artist TvBoy, Olympic gold medalists Adam Peaty and Saul Craviotto, the German goalkeeper Marc ter Stegen, two-time Ballon d'Or and Best FIFA Award-winning footballer, Alexia Putellas, and in Australia, football stars, Mary Fowler and Andrew Redmayne.
