Volvo's life-saving IntelliSafe pedestrian and cyclist detection technology has been officially recognised today by consumer research and ratings company Canstar Blue in its 2015 Automotive Industry Excellence Awards. Intellisafe is Volvo Car's suite of intuitive safety technologies that supports daily driving, protecting occupants in event of an accident and often preventing collisions in the first place.
In making the award, Canstar Blue said Volvo's IntelliSafe Pedestrian Detection system could help prevent collisions between cyclists, pedestrians and motorists by alerting a driver to their presence, and automatically braking if a collision is imminent.
Volvo IntelliSafe uses radar embedded into the grille and a camera built into the rearview mirror to scan the area in front of the car, categorising objects found, and alerting the driver with a flashing warning light on the windscreen and audible alarm. If the driver fails to react to the warning, the system will automatically apply the brakes, and will either prevent a collision or reduce the severity of a collision.
Since its launch in 2010, Volvo's City Safety (part of Intellisafe) has been credited with reducing bodily injuries by 33% and general accidents by 20% in the USA, when comparing data of Volvo's XC60 vs other mid-size SUV's.\*
Volvo Car Australia Managing Director, Kevin McCann said IntelliSafe continues Volvo's long tradition of developing world-first innovative safety technology for vehicles which saves lives and reduces injuries.
"In 1959 Volvo gave the world the seat belt, and since then we have developed over 150 safety innovations, including numerous world firsts, such as the first rear-facing child seat, the Side Impact Protection System and the City Safety Autonomous Emergency Braking System, among others. As a pioneer in innovative safety technology, we are delighted to receive the Canstar Blue Innovation Excellence Award.
"Volvo's focus on being the No.1 car brand for families and safety will continue this August in Australia when the next generation of safety features are unveiled in the All- New XC90," continued McCann.
The IntelliSafe camera and radar system in the All-New XC90 has been enhanced to enable detection of pedestrian and cyclists in full darkness for the first time. The All- New XC90 also comes as standard with two world-first safety innovations: automatic braking if the car turns in front of an oncoming vehicle, which is a common scenario at busy intersections, and run off-road protection which aims to protects occupants in road departure scenarios.
