Volvo has unveiled its revised flagship saloon at the Amsterdam Motor Show. The original classic Volvo lines have been retained but subtle refinements have
given the car fresh appeal to the prestige market. Driving dynamics will be enhanced with availability of the new FOUR-C active chassis.
"The Volvo S80 has long been the industry benchmark in terms of safety, comfort and space. Now we are taking a huge stride forward in terms of elegance and driving
dynamics," says Hans-Olov Olsson, President and CEO of Volvo Cars.
Revised frontal appearance
The complete front section that surrounds the grille has a new profile with a gentler transition to the body sides and to the spoiler area. The lower air intake has been re-profiled and features
a transverse chrome strip which links together the fog lights. The grille has a new square mesh or 'egg-crate' pattern in dark silver metallic with chromed surrounding trim.
Redesigned rear section
The rear of the Volvo S80 has been redesigned. The boot lid is now one piece. The tail lights are reduced somewhat in size by using LED brake lamps. The rear bumper has a more substantial profile
colour-matched to the car's body harmonised with the colour-coordinated moulding along either side of the body.
Revised interior design
There are a number of refinements to the interior. New door panels and handles, sports-style instrument dials are just a few.
Volvo S80 with FOUR-C active chassis
The revised Volvo S80 will be available with the same type of actively controlled chassis as fitted to the Volvo S60 R and V70 R.
As in the S60 R, the driver will have the option of selecting chassis behaviour, with a choice between a comfort and a sport setting.
The active chassis is based on a highly advanced technology known as FOUR-C (Continuously Controlled Chassis Concept). This system was developed together with +âGÇôhlins Racing AB. In FOUR-C,
each shock absorber is regulated electronically and entirely individually
FOUR-C will make the Volvo S80 a highly competent and extremely comfortable long-distance tourer +óGé¼GÇ£ offering exceptional ride comfort allied to dependable, safe roadholding properties.
Improved steering characteristics
Just like the Volvo S60 R, Volvo V70 R and Volvo XC90, the new Volvo S80 will be equipped with steering gear from ZF of Germany. The result is more direct steering response and enhanced steering
precision.
The revised Volvo S80 with FOUR-C will go on the Australian market in the fourth quarter of 2003. Final specifications and pricing will be announced at that time.
