Major changes to Subaru's performance twins, the All-Wheel Drive turbocharged WRX and WRX STI, are set to add more white-hot thrills for drivers of the brand's long-established pocket rockets.

Mechanical and cosmetic changes will drive the owner experience to a new adrenaline-charged level as the "Rex" pair add to their rally-backed reputation.

Driving performance, the features list and quality are all big winners in Subaru's heavily revised Model Year 2018 line-up, which despite all the extra kit, still has a starting price of $39,240 Manufacturer's List Price (MLP)* for WRX manual.

WRX and WRX STI share multiple external and cabin changes to produce even more sporty presence, including a revised nose with more aggressive grille design.

Even greater attention to interior quality adds to the air of exclusivity, while introduction of EyeSight® Driver Assist in WRX automatic transmission variants, extends Subaru's dominance in bringing the potentially accident-avoiding technology to the masses.      

All automatic WRXs also add an electronic parking brake and Automatic Vehicle Hold – meaning the driver doesn't have to keep their foot on the brake pedal in situations such as traffic lights and road congestion.

Subaru's performance flagship model introduces a new range-topper – the WRX STI spec.R, featuring Recaro seats.

Among the new features on all WRX variants:

The outside of both WRX and WRX STI offers a high-performance look, with an even more aggressive face.

The revised design evokes a more powerful, precise driving style, befitting their sports sedan capabilities.

The design blends functional elegance honed in the motorsport arena - through events like the 24 Hours of Nürburgring - with a high-impact visual statement in line with high-performance, spirited driving.

Among the detail exterior changes:

• More refined front end common to new generation Subarus
• The front retains the classic Subaru hexagonal grille and C-shaped design elements for head lights, but is revamped with a more seamless look, for a sharper style, reinforcing distinctive Subaru design and helping boost on-road presence.
• Powerful front bumper and fog light bezel design, for better performance
• The blacked out opening in the lower grille is enlarged for a much more potent look. Its shape also helps promote cooling capability, while adding to the cars' dynamic, low centre-of-gravity feel.
• The functional design of the fog light bezels in WRX is enhanced to produce a more performance-oriented look.
• Newly designed LED headlights for a sharper look
• Steering Responsive LED headlights, in both high and low beam modes. The use of a single light point in the headlights gives the front a sharper, more intense appearance.
• Indicator lights are moved inside the headlights, simplifying the fog light bezels, with the updated shape making the opening look larger. This produces a lower looking stance similar to a race car.
• New 19-inch wheels on WRX STI and 18-inch wheels on WRX
• Further accentuate the cars' driving potential, with a racing car look. The 19-inch forged alloy wheels on WRX STI symbolize the car's very essence and its exceptional handling capability. FRONT BUMPER

The front bumper is revamped with a design that evokes a more powerful, precise driving style. A border around the lower grille is blacked out with a spun-dyed geometric texture and the opening enlarged. This improves cooling capability and also emphasizes the car's powerful, low centre of gravity look.

GRILLE

The hexagonal grille is changed and the frame painted black, producing a sharper, well-defined shape. A line running from both sides of the Subaru Constellation six-star emblem is added, with the horizontal theme flowing through to the headlights, highlighting the distinctive Subaru design.

INTERIOR

The upgraded interiors on both WRX and WRX STI produce a sportier, prestigious feel.

The cabin design adds to driving excitement and makes the cars even more enjoyable to own, with a black colour scheme that creates a sportier mood.

Changes for Model Year 2018 are focused on creating an even more engaging interior design and raising quality, with more cohesive interior finish and a greater sense of performance potential.

Interior decorations with a rigid, shiny black finish are increased to provide a sportier, elegant feel.

WRX STI adds even more exclusive special touches, including Recaro seats in WRX STI spec.R, with excellent support; and red seatbelts befitting the brand's performance flagship.

RECARO FRONT SEATS (WRX STI spec.R)

The Recaro seats are designed for both excellent support and comfort.

The shape around the shoulder area is wide, for a greater contact area with the occupant, reducing the pressure that the body is subjected to from forces generated when turning - maintaining a better seating posture.

Use of high-density urethane foam in the backrest and cushion ensures excellent ride comfort.

The seats are designed with exceptional collision safety, as well as a full range of practical features like power adjustment – a first for Recaros in Subarus - seat heaters and seatback pockets.

The Recaros offer the highest level of protection against whiplash and other collision effects.

In WRX Premium and WRX STI Premium, electric lumbar support is added to the specification list.

5.9-INCH MULTI-FUNCTION DISPLAY (MFD) – ALL WRX AND WRX STI

The new wider, higher definition, LCD MFD makes viewing and reading data easier. The new design is used for all display content, which is consolidated and reconfigured. This includes images from the new Front View Monitor in mid and range-topping WRX STIs; and an air conditioning status screen that allows passengers to see all relevant information easily. The larger, better clarity display also makes it easier to view the range of information available, and easier to check its status.

The screen includes a wide range of information including:

DRIVING ASSIST SCREEN

The screen can display Front View Monitor (FVM) images, or alternatively, the screens of the FVM and the Side View Monitor (SVM) can be displayed simultaneously.

POP-UP SCREEN

Air conditioning settings are displayed for approximately three seconds when operating the air conditioning system, showing:

• Set temperature (driver's side/passenger side)
• A/C mode display
• Airflow mode display
• Operation status
• Fan speed display
• Air inlet mode display

BASIC SCREEN

Information bar

The screen layout now includes a static display area at the top to show air conditioning operating status and other details, including:

WRX STI CENTRE CONSOLE

The gearshift surround panel now features a high gloss black finish, with surface wrapping highlighted with red stitching on the sides, for a more elegant look and air of exclusivity.

DOOR GRIPS

The door grips have a better feel and are easier to grasp. To prevent fingers from slipping, the pull handle section is changed to TPO (Thermoplastic olefin). Door grip shape is also changed for a firmer finger hold.

INSTRUMENT CLUSTER

A newly designed gauge panel features white illumination and red needles, with the covering glass now tinted.

AIR CONDITIONING

The control of AUTO air conditioning is changed to improve practical fuel efficiency by approximately 0.9% while retaining the same level of performance.

SUSPENSION
Chassis roll rigidity, suspension coils and shock absorbers are optimised to enhance control and stability, and provide better ride comfort – meaning greater enjoyment behind the wheel – and a more exciting driving.
Improved steering stability and ride comfort are achieved through:

SAFETY

BRAKES

In WRX STI variants, the combination of Brembo high-performance brakes and drilled rotors offer superior fade-resistance and braking performance.

The more powerful Brembos and cross-drilled rotors are used to deliver increased braking power for consistent pedal feel.

The opposing-piston 6-pot brake callipers at the front and 2-pot at the rear are made with a mono-block body, avoiding uneven pad wear, while drilled rotors produce better heat dissipation and excellent fade resistance. This combination ensures reliable braking, even under extreme driving conditions.

The callipers are finished in the same unique yellow as the concept car revealed at the New York International Auto Show, boosting WRX STI's appeal.

As well as revising all the brake components - callipers, rotors and pads – the new yellow colour clearly expresses the extra capability the brakes provide.

• A high-rigidity mono-block body and opposing-piston 6-pot front and 2-pot rear callipers are used.
• Exclusive yellow paint for a high-impact exterior view.

• Larger ventilated disc rotors (front φ340, rear φ326). The drilled rotors aid cleaning pad surfaces and improve fade-resistance.

• Newly developed brake pads with larger surface area (approximately 20% front, 50% rear), for superior braking feel, fade-resistance and control.

In WRX, Jurid front brake pads offer exceptional braking feel, superior fade-resistance and a more satisfying driving experience. The callipers are also painted in a sporty red (front-only in CVT variants), for a more high-performance visual design. The newly developed brake pads, with a high friction coefficient material, improve brake efficiency by approximately 20%, giving drivers control of immense braking power with minimal effort.

FRONT VIEW MONITOR (FVM –WRX Premium, WRX STI Premium and WRX STI spec.R)

The FVM helps prevent collisions at intersections and complements the Side View Monitor in the suite of Vision Assist features.

The FVM uses images from a camera mounted at the front of the vehicle - in the centre of the grille, below the badge. Images can be shown on the MFD to check for approaching vehicles or pedestrians at intersections with poor visibility, parking facing a wall, or other scenarios. It enables the driver to check for blind spots in front of the car, which could help avoid accidents at intersections.

The front view screen can be displayed by pushing the central switch of the MFD, which automatically switches back to the FVM when shifting from R to another position, for added convenience when parking.

For WRX Premium and WRX STI Premium variants with a Side View Monitor (SVM), the FVM and SVM screens can be displayed simultaneously.

STEERING RESPONSIVE HEADLIGHTS (SRH – EVERY WRX AND WRX STI)

SRHs help make driving safer by ensuring clear visibility at night. The headlight beams move sideways to match steering input when turning corners or at intersections, lighting up the area that the vehicle is travelling, to improve visibility at night.

A swivel actuator moves the headlight beams. When navigating a turn, the direction of travel is calculated from the steering angle and vehicle speed, and the headlights illuminate the upcoming turn to improve visibility.

The high and low beams are mounted within a single unit, enabling the function to operate even when high beams are in use.

The integrated headlight units house the indicator light, LED high and low beams (bi-functional single-bulb projector-type); LED Daytime Running Lights and the Steering Responsive Headlight feature.

LED FOG LIGHTS – WRX-ONLY

LED fog lights offer better visibility to the side. Power consumption is reduced with the use of LEDs (-72% compared to the superseded model). To improve safety and visibility when driving at night, the light covers a broader area left and right.

EYESIGHT®

The EyeSight® Driver Assist System debuts on WRX automatic variants in Australia.

EyeSight® offers outstanding preventive safety, combined with features for lessening the driver load.

The cars feature the latest third generation EyeSight® system. 

Stereo camera images are in colour and the recognition is expanded, enabling "vision" of multiple items simultaneously.

Stereo camera

Third generation EyeSight® uses a CMOS camera, with higher resolution than the conventional CCD, enabling recognition of even low-contrast objects.

Stereo camera performance and the 3D image processing engine offer fast, accurate object recognition. Longer distances and wider angles are covered for easier recognition in the distance and on either side.

Control accuracy and stability are optimised at all speeds, together with pedestrian pre-collision detection performance.

The CMOS camera and enhanced control logic provide great operational stability during poor weather conditions too.

A larger number of potential obstacles can be recognised simultaneously.

Pre-collision Braking

Operation range of Pre-collision Braking allows early recognition of objects. Impact avoidance performance is maximised. 

The speed difference criteria for collision with a vehicle in front is a maximum of 50km/h, for enhanced collision prevention.

Brake light and object recognition occur, even at relatively high speeds, and when the vehicle in front decelerates hard. This allows fast activation of primary brake control and increases the collision avoidance area.

Adaptive Cruise Control

EyeSight® recognises vehicles at long distances and wide angles, including multi-lane roads and when vehicles cut in during traffic jams.

Pre-Collision Steering Assist

When the vehicle is steered to avoid collision, VDC control increases turning ability, assisting the driver.

Instrument panel

Clear visual and audible warnings alert the driver to potential hazards detected by EyeSight.

EyeSight® status and warnings are displayed on the windscreen.

THE DETAIL

Subaru Rear Vehicle Detection (SRVD)

Radar sensors installed on the back of the car detect vehicles and other objects behind. The LED indicators (proximity indicators) on the door mirrors and a warning sound alert the driver.

SRVD features:

Blind Spot Detection (BSD)

This detects vehicles in the blind spot area created by the rear C/D pillars and activates the alert, notifying the driver. If the driver operates the indicator while a hazardous vehicle is detected - and the system evaluates that the driver intends to change lanes - the LEDs blink to warn the driver.

Lane Change Assist (LCA)

Vehicles in the adjacent lane approaching from the rear are detected and the driver is notified if there is a risk of collision by changing lanes.

Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA)

When reversing, vehicles approaching from the left or right are detected and the driver is notified by visual and audible cues if there is a risk of collision.

Side View Monitor (SVM)

A camera is added to the passenger side door mirror and the image displayed on the MFD screen. Objects in the blind spot at the front left side of the vehicle are easier to see, improving safety.

AUTO VEHICLE HOLD (AVH – ALL WRX CVT VARIANTS)

AVH alleviates driver fatigue by holding the vehicle in position, even when releasing the brake pedal while stopped. This means drivers no longer have to keep the brake pedal applied in situations like traffic congestion, waiting at traffic lights, or stopped on a hill.
