Subaru's second generation BRZ sports coupe set pulses racing overnight when it was unveiled in the United States.
Renowned as a "pure sports car", new BRZ will build on its iconic reputation, drawing on its hugely popular horizontally-opposed Boxer engine rear-wheel-drive combination – this time with a power increase to 2.4 litres.
New BRZ is designed to deliver even more driving pleasure, a true sports car identity, and greater "peace-of-mind", with significant evolution of all aspects.
Once again, it is a joint development project with Toyota Motor Corporation.
Among new BRZ's main features (U.S. model):
ENGINE
The expanded four-cylinder displacement of 2.4-litres includes thoroughly enhanced intake/exhaust efficiency and reduced friction, delivering 15% more torque than the superseded model.
With a smooth revving feel and sharp throttle response, the engine provides stronger acceleration and a noticeable power increase.
TRANSMISSION
Models equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission gain a refined Sport mode. When the car detects the driver's intension for sporty driving, the transmission automatically selects and holds an appropriate gear to make cornering feel more direct.
Handling performance overall is enhanced for ultimate driving pleasure.
STRUCTURE
Using knowledge and techniques learned from development of the Subaru Global Platform, as well as adopting new methods such as inner frame construction and structural adhesive application, BRZ's new body delivers a 60% increase in front lateral bending rigidity and a 50% increase in torsional stiffness. The stiffer body contributes to improved steering response, more nimble handling and better traction in cornering.
The use of aluminium for the roof, front guards and bonnet minimizes the weight increase of the larger engine. Added structural enhancements improve collision safety too, also contributing to optimized weight layout and lower centre of gravity, improving agility.
Models equipped with 18-inch aluminium alloy wheels feature Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tyres, for greater controllability and sharper response, producing more driving pleasure.
EXTERIOR
New BRZ's sophisticated exterior design evokes its fun driving theme - loaded with sports car dynamism.
The hexagonal grille, set lower and wider, signifies the low centre-of-gravity. The character line starting from the grille continues through the front guards toward the rear, expressing the strength of the core body.
Several aerodynamic items are used, including side sill spoilers and air outlets, located behind the front guards. These features add accents to the exterior design and also aid performance.
INTERIOR
The simple, horizontal style instrument panel and low hood provide a wider view, for more focus on driving.
The combination of a 7-inch TFT and a segment LCD, mean the digital gauge cluster helps the driver recognize important information intuitively and quickly.
A contoured sport seat with firm side bolsters communicates the vehicle's movement accurately, while minimizing driver fatigue.
The 8-inch multimedia infotainment system, including standard smartphone integration with Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ offers intuitive, smartphone-like operation.
SAFETY
BRZ safety is further enhanced, including driver assist technology and improved collision performance.
Models equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission feature Subaru's EyeSight Driver Assist Technology – a new feature in BRZ. The functions including pre-collision braking and adaptive cruise control. Collision safety performance is improved via the stronger body, using larger amounts of high-tensile steel and enhanced passenger protection systems.
Subaru Australia General Manager, Blair Read, said: "It's tremendously exciting to get these first glimpses into second generation BRZ.
"This car gave the whole sports segment a massive shake when it originally launched in 2012 and based on what we know so far about the second generation, we've got very high hopes for its ongoing appeal in Australia."
Subaru Australia has yet to confirm a launch date for second generation BRZ locally.
