TECHNICAL
ENGINE
Levorg is powered by Subaru's turbocharged high performance 2.0-litre Direct Injection engine, producing 197 Kilowatts of power at 5600 rpm and 350 Newtonmetres of torque from 2400-5200 rpm.
SPORT LINEARTRONIC CONTINUOUSLY VARIABLE TRANSMISSION (CVT)
Auto Stepped Speed Control
Levorg's CVT incorporates the Subaru Intelligent Drive (SI-Drive) system that includes three options: Sports Sharp (S#), Sport (S) and Intelligent (I) modes, to suit all driving styles.
When in D range and Intelligent mode or S mode are selected, the speed control changes according to accelerator input.
Stepless shifting is used when the accelerator input is small.
Stepped shifting occurs under heavy acceleration, linked to increased vehicle speed and engine rpm. Stepped shifting prevents engine speed from peaking, for more linear and sporty driving.
S# mode enables drivers to select dedicated eight-step cross ratio shifting. This means they can control acceleration and deceleration as desired through linear response, with a ratio coverage approximately 15 per cent smaller than that of I or S modes.
Manual mode
Temporary Manual mode is accessible when in D-range, using the steering wheel paddle shifters to instantly find the right gear during normal driving, braking or acceleration. It enables agile, sporty driving. When the system determines that the vehicle is travelling at a constant speed, it will automatically return the transmission to D-range.
The engine also supports standing starts in second gear, limiting the likelihood of wheel spin in snow or other slippery surfaces.
Use of a six-speed configuration in normal driving allows for a wider gear step ratio, keeping the gear matched to engine rpm, with less shifting. (I and S mode).
STEERING
Levorg inherits the renowned steering response of other iconic turbocharged Subarus.
SUSPENSION
Optimum body rigidity and suspension stroke produce an excellent ride that also translates to comfortable long distance touring and low NVH.
Front suspension
A high strength suspension cross-member and hardened front arm bushings (with inter-ring) increase attachment rigidity.
A thickened twin-tube outer strut increases bending stiffness, increasing tread rigidity and enabling reliable, linear handling response.
Increased stabilizer diameter and the spring constant of the coil springs increases roll stiffness, making Levorg more stable.
Anti-dive is optimised by locating the attachment points of the arm as low as possible, suppressing rise of the inner front wheel and providing natural roll and linear feel.
A bending point on the front support reduces resistance power at the time of impact. Combined with a stiffening plate on the attachment point, linear response is enhanced.
Reduced noise is also achieved through the stiffened attachment point for the arm front and rear bushings.
Rear suspension
The hardened sub-frame and trailing bushings, and use of pillow bushing for the lateral link and rear outer bushing, increase tread rigidity and delay response for lateral G- force, improving rear stability and steering response.
Increased stabilizer diameter and the spring constant of the coil springs increases roll stiffness, making Levorg more stable and roll resistant.
The attachment point for the lateral link front, on the rear sub-frame, is positioned low to produce a linear toe angle. Initial toe-in (3mm) generates lateral tyre force quickly, achieving highly responsive steering.
Support in the sub-frame rear increases torsional stiffness of the body and tread rigidity in the rear suspension. This also contributes to improved rear stability and steering response.
The attachment point of the shock absorber on the lateral link rear is positioned outward, improving the damper lever ratio, benefitting steering response and ride comfort.
AXLE
The propeller shaft features a constant velocity joint with collapsible structure, lessening cabin NVH and enhancing quality feel and safety. The collapsible structure reduces the G-force in collisions, aiding safety performance.
Hub unit
Levorg has a 114.3 mm PCD for increased rigidity. The inner seal is enhanced to prevent dirty water flowing into the bearings, aiding reliability and reducing rotation resistance, to improve fuel economy.
Housing
The propeller shaft housing minimises weight without compromising rigidity. The rear housing is exclusively developed for Electronic Parking Brake-equipped models.
BODY STRUCTURE
The front half of the body is derived from WRX and the rear half exclusively designed, balancing style with wagon utility and high rigidity.
Cargo door opening area is maximised for easy access and load carrying.
High strength materials are used throughout the body structure, also aiding handling dynamics and crashworthiness.
¦: 270MPa = 50%
¦: 400~440MPa = 8%
¦: 590MPa = 38%
¦: 980MPa = 4%
Body rigidity and durability
Torsional and bending stiffness is optimised and joints between structures strengthened.
These include:
- Joints between the front bulk head and the A-pillar
- Joints between the rear floor and rear apron (both over and under the floor)
- Joints between the rear apron and rear panel
Reduced inertial mass
The aluminium bonnet and turbo grille design help minimise weight while also contributing to the low centre of gravity – a signature of every Subaru.
Noise Vibration and Harshness, and sealing
The toe board and floor pan are thickened to reduce NVH, while the strengthened toe board and tunnel insulators absorb sound.
Noise and exterior dust intrusion are also minimised by measures including sealer applied to the rear wheel housing section and the end of the outer side panel; plus covered tie-down and side sill holes.
Aerodynamics
Aerodynamics are optimised through a variety of measures to benefit fuel efficiency.
The bottom of the under cover is located as low as possible, while aerodynamic efficiency also benefits from the tyre flaps and mud guards.
The bonnet turbo grille position also aids wind flow.
SAFETY
In line with Subaru's ever evolving safety commitment, core Levorg traits such as Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and responsive chassis provide top-class hazard avoidance.
High tensile steel is used to maintain structural integrity from all directions in collisions, including the front, sides and rear - while minimising overall weight.
Every Levorg has seven airbags: dual front, side, curtain and driver's knee airbags; and has a five-star rating for occupant safety from the independent Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP).
BRAKES
Levorg has a high response brake booster. Use of a high response valve structure improves stiffness, while matching brake pedal strokes, even under sudden braking.
Pedal response is also optimised by reducing the channel resistance of air being supplied to the booster when the pedal is depressed.
Booster characteristics are tuned in line with Levorg's sporty character.
Front brakes
The shims of the brake pads are laminated, rather than conventional rubber and stainless steel, improving pedal feel.
Rear brakes
Electronic Parking Brake integrated brake system
The Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) is built into the brake caliper, clasping the brake pad with motor power to ensure hold. Locating the EPB inside the caliper makes the system quieter and more responsive.
Accelerator linked operation
The EPB automatically releases when the system judges the driver is moving the vehicle.
Hill Holder
When the vehicle is stopped on a hill, the system automatically applies the EPB to prevent rolling backward between brake release and re-starting.
The EPB reduces weight by 3kg compared to a conventional cable/pull handbrake. It also improves responsiveness.
EYESIGHT
Levorg 2.0GT and 2.0GT-S feature the latest third generation EyeSight driver assist system.
Stereo camera images are in colour and the recognition is expanded, enabling "vision" of multiple items simultaneously.
Length and width of camera view are extended approximately 40 per cent over second generation EyeSight.
Other EyeSight refinements include:
Improved performance of collision prevention features:
- Enhanced pedestrian avoidance
- Pre-Collision Braking Assist
- Addition of Pre-Collision Steering Assist
Improved "tracking" performance:
- Advanced performance of Adaptive Cruise Control (Brake light recognition etc.)
Stereo camera
Third generation EyeSight uses a CMOS camera, with higher resolution than the conventional CCD, enabling recognition of even low-contrast objects.
Stereo camera performance and the 3D image processing engine are improved for faster and more accurate object recognition. Longer distances and wider angles are covered for easier recognition in the distance and on either side.
Control accuracy and stability are improved at all speeds, together with pedestrian pre-collision detection performance.
The CMOS camera and enhanced control logic provide greater operational stability during poor weather conditions too.
The physical structure is also revised, with the camera closer to the windscreen glass, with less overhang.
The recognition area of the camera is approximately 40 per cent wider and deeper. Combined with colour recognition, it means a larger number of potential obstacles can be recognised simultaneously.
Pre-collision Braking
Operation range of Pre-collision Braking is expanded, allowing earlier recognition of objects. Impact avoidance performance is improved through better control.
The speed difference criteria for collision with a vehicle in front is expanded from a maximum of 30km/h to a maximum of 50km/h, for enhanced collision prevention.
Brake light and object recognition are improved, even at relatively high speeds, and when the vehicle in front decelerates hard. This allows faster activation of primary brake control and increases the collision avoidance area.
Adaptive Cruise Control
EyeSight's expanded recognition area improves tracking performance, with vehicles recognized at longer distances and wider angles, particularly on multi-lane roads and when vehicles cut in during traffic jams.
Pre-Collision Steering Assist
When the vehicle is steered to avoid collision, VDC control increases turning ability, assisting the driver.
Instrument panel
Clear visual and audible warnings alert the driver to potential hazards detected by EyeSight.
EyeSight Assist Monitor (Levorg 2.0GT-S)
EyeSight status and warnings are displayed on the windscreen. The driver can gain a quicker understanding of the current situation - and take steps to avoid dangers - because warnings/displays can be recognized without taking eyes off the surrounding road environment.
The display is easy to understand, as the colour and flashing cycle changes according to the danger level.
EyeSight Assist Monitor LED operation specifications:
- Red, simultaneous flash: Pre-collision primary brake, increased braking required warning, vehicle distance warning, pre-collision secondary brake, AT acceleration control for automatic transmission
- Yellow, alternate flash: Lane Sway Warning
- Yellow, one side flash: Lane Departure Warning, lane avoidance request warning (one side lit, one side flashing. Departure warning on the flashing side).
- Green light: Adaptive Cruise Control, vehicle in front captured

THE DETAIL
Subaru Rear Vehicle Detection (SRVD)
Radar sensors installed on the back of the car detect vehicles and other objects behind. The LED indicators (proximity indicators) on the door mirrors and a warning sound alert the driver.
SRVD features:
Blind Spot Detection (BSD)
This detects vehicles in the blind spot area created by the rear C/D pillars and activates the alert, notifying the driver. If the driver operates the indicator while a hazardous vehicle is detected - and the system evaluates that the driver intends to change lanes - the LEDs blink to warn the driver.
Lane Change Assist (LCA)
Vehicles in the adjacent lane approaching from the rear are detected and the driver is notified if there is a risk of collision by changing lanes.
Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA)
When reversing, vehicles approaching from the left or right are detected and the driver is notified by visual and audible cues if there is a risk of collision.
Side View Monitor (SVM)
A camera is added to the passenger side door mirror and the image displayed on the MFD screen. Objects in the blind spot at the front left side of the vehicle are easier to see, improving safety.
VEHICLE DYNAMICS CONTROL (VDC)
Every Levorg features VDC.
Control logic effective in avoiding hazards is integrated to provide world-class hazard avoidance capability. The Active Torque Vectoring component improves cornering performance and steering response.
VDC constantly monitors vehicle movement to flexibly control ABS, TCS (engine and brake Limited Slip Differential control), and VDC (engine and brake control for side slip prevention). Intervention timing is optimized to ensure highly stable control.
The torque reduction control of VDC and the Traction Control System (TCS) can be cancelled to make it easier to negotiate muddy and snowy surfaces.
OTHER SAFETY ASSETS
Every Levorg has LED low beam headlights and rear combination lights, plus daytime running lights.
Levorg 2.0GT-S features automatic headlights.
The nose-cone front structure optimises pedestrian protection in collisions.
The alloy bonnet also maximises space between the engine and bonnet underside, absorbing energy in pedestrian collisions and potentially reducing injury.
Rear offset collision crash structure
When a rear offset collision occurs, energy is distributed and absorbed through the diagonal member to the left and right, minimising cabin deformation.
Safety pedal
In heavy frontal collisions, a kick-back suppression mechanism is incorporated in the brake pedal, lessening risk of lower limb damage.
Steering column
To prevent the steering column from entering the cabin in a heavy frontal collision, a collapsible structure is incorporated in between the lower and middle jackets.
Rear seatbelt pre-tensioners
Pre-tensioners are included in the rear seatbelts. Shortening of the inner belt increases occupant restraint in a collision.
Visibility
The A-pillar, positioned well ahead of the driver, combines with door-mounted wing mirrors and front quarter windows to maximise the glass area, contributing to great visibility.
Retractable saddle-shaped headrests on the rear seats aid rearward field of vision.
Reversing camera
Every Levorg features a reversing camera, with guidelines constantly displayed. The ultra-wide angle 160 degree camera optimises field of vision and the camera is positioned within 60 mm of the vehicle's centre, offering a true display.
Headlight washers
Headlight washers ensure light beam clarity.
Bad weather - automatic windscreen wipers
In Levorg 2.0GT-S, automatic windscreen wipers activate when water drops are detected on the glass.
When the front wipers are operating, shifting the gear into reverse automatically operates the rear wiper, ensuring rearward visibility.
Auto lights
Levorg 2.0GT-S also has automatic lights.
Rear view mirror
The rear view mirror has an automatic anti-glare function, integrated with the High Beam Assist (Levorg 2.0GT-S).
It improves safety by automatically reducing the amount of reflected light according to the degree of glare. A built-in sensor detects ambient light and head lights of following vehicles, continually adjusting mirror brightness. The anti-glare function is activated by a switch on the mirror face side. A light indicates when it is active.
