ALL-NEW SUBARU CROSSTREK: A TALENTED SMALL SUV THAT'S READY TO TACKLE AN ACTIVE LIFESTYLE
The all-new Subaru Crosstrek is the culmination of years of research and development from Subaru Corporation. For this new model, and in another first for a Subaru vehicle, Subaru engineers and designers worked with a medical school to study the structure and movement of the human body to determine causes of ride discomfort. The result is a well-engineered vehicle that achieves a more comfortable ride, providing enjoyment across a broad range of driving scenarios – whether that is day-to-day grocery shopping or long-distance road trips.
Advancing development, with a focus on the structure of the human body, enabled ride comfort quality to be refined through insight, which cannot be obtained from vibration measurements and other data.
Through this new design approach, there are five main points that were achieved:
- Improved ride quality and comfort.
- Stress-free ride comfort with a focus on details such as sound, making driving more fun.
- Refined chassis and body, providing peace of mind and enjoyment for all occupants.
- Advanced AWD, making driving even more comfortable.
- Fun driving with peace of mind with the e-Boxer.
HUMAN-CENTERED DESIGN APPROACH
A new approach based on the structure of the human body was adopted for the all-new Subaru Crosstrek.
Subaru Corporation in Japan collaborated with a medical school to study the structure of the human body and the mechanisms behind what causes driver discomfort, fatigue and lower back pain when driving a vehicle.
The results found that ride comfort is not solely affected by the vibration of the vehicle, it is also affected by sounds and changes in visual information because of jerking and head swaying during driving.
As an example, it was found that people feel discomfort when the semi-circular canals, which control the body's sense of balance, are shaken unnecessarily. Therefore, it was hypothesised that reducing shaking of the head – which is where the semi-circular canals are located – would improve ride comfort. Based off this, the seats in the all-new Subaru Crosstrek were redeveloped to reduce shaking of the head.
Additionally, roof damping has been improved to help reduce the sound pressure fluctuations in the cabin. This has been achieved by utilising high-damping mastic (elastic adhesive) with high vibration absorption and damping between the roof panel and brace.
By adopting a human-oriented design approach, this resulted in a small SUV that is intuitive to your needs with improved vehicle ergonomics.
EXTERIOR DESIGN
The all-new Subaru Crosstrek features a striking design with sharp aggressive lines, accentuating its sturdy capability, while also being fun and stylish – a design that will resonate with a broad range of buyers.
The all-new Subaru Crosstrek has sharp form lines that evoke the feeling of agile movement, and the bulging fender emphasises the characteristics of lively driving even on more difficult terrain. More pronounced cladding surrounding the wheel arches contribute to a bolder and more athletic look.
Various textures such as dimpled satin, diamond and sharkskin surfaces have been adopted for each section of the car to assist with air flow. In addition to functionality, this also contributes towards visually expressing the vehicle's robustness.
A textured mountain motif has been incorporated into the rear door side sill plates and the lower trim tailgate to not only provide grip, but to resemble the all-new Subaru Crosstrek's active, adventure-ready spirit.
BONNET AND FRONT GRILLE
The all-new Subaru Crosstrek features a newly designed aluminium bonnet which has been utilised due to its lightweight properties. The use of aluminium also significantly contributes to pedestrian protection due to a softer head impact zone.
The all-new Subaru Crosstrek features an entirely new grille design, now with larger more aggressively styled honeycombing but still in the signature hexagonal shape.
FRONT FENDERS
The use of aluminium front fenders results in a significant weight saving of approximately 2 kilograms and allows for the optimisation of weight distribution around the vehicle.
FRONT, SIDE AND REAR CLADDING
To enhance the bolder styling and further emphasise the Subaru Crosstrek's dual-personality, cladding has been utilised at the front, side, and rear.
Cladding features over both wheel arches, with the front comprising venting to aid in pressurised air being released from within the front wheel arch.
At the rear, raised sections at each corner surrounding the reflectors and a lower central diffuser highlights the sporty and fun nature of the all-new Subaru Crosstrek. Moreover, the rear bumper also features an air outlet for air accumulating within the rear bumper, to help prevent vehicle sway from wind turbulence.
HEADLIGHTS AND TAILLIGHTS
Sleek and stylish taillights feature on the all-new Subaru Crosstrek, featuring tri-colour housing with black accents. Placement of the three-dimensional taillights, raising up from the body with a sharp contour, accentuates an aggressive and sporty appearance.
LED headlamps have been adopted in all models, which improves visibility at night, and contributes to reducing power consumption.
For the first time on a Subaru vehicle, Crosstrek AWD 2.0R, AWD 2.0S and Hybrid S feature LED corning lamps, enhancing frontward visibility at night.
At the rear, LED rear combination lamps featuring a modern, sharp C-shaped signature with a three-dimensional figure are introduced.
EXTERNAL DOOR MIRRORS
Door mirrors on the all-new Subaru Crosstrek have been redesigned to improve both aesthetics and aerodynamics. Firstly, the mounting stay has been carefully redesigned to be smaller and sleeker, resulting in an overall mirror height reduction of 22mm.
The mirror glass width has also been expanded by approximately 5mm, and height reduced by approximately 6mm. Despite the mirror glass being shorter than previous generation XV, the all-new Crosstrek provides greater horizontal viewing angle by approximately one degree.
All Crosstrek variants feature electric folding mirror assemblies, which include mirror heaters (not available on AWD 2.0L and AWD Hybrid L) and turn signals. For variants equipped with the Side View Monitor (SVM) – AWD 2.0R, AWD 2.0S and AWD Hybrid S – the SVM camera is now smaller with less protrusion from the mirror assembly.
All Crosstrek variants feature a high gloss black mirror cap, irrespective of external body colour.
ROOF RAILS
All Crosstrek variants feature streamlined roof rails as standard, which offers a wide range of benefits for both practicality and styling.
The addition of roof rails increases storage capacity, convenience and allows for transportation of bulky items, such as luggage or sports equipment. It also provides a versatile platform for attaching cargo carriers or bike racks – making this vehicle ideal for road trips, outdoor adventures, or everyday errands.
The overall roof rail height has been reduced by 5mm (over previous generation Subaru XV) to limit increases in aerodynamic drag.
WHEELS AND TYRES
All Crosstrek variants come equipped with alloy wheels with a 114.3mm pitch circle diameter (PCD) and an offset of 55mm.
There are three different wheel designs available (depending on the variant). The 2.0R, 2.0S and Hybrid S feature an 18-inch dark metallic wheel with machined finish. Hybrid L features a 17-inch dark metallic wheel with machined finish, with 2.0L variant featuring a dark metallic painted 17-inch wheel.

HEATING, VENTILATION, AND AIR-CONDITIONING (HVAC)
The air-conditioning, heating and ventilation system features the use of larger floor ducting for greater passenger comfort. The heater core, condenser and evaporator provide for greater heat exchange properties, and therefore improved efficiency and capability.
The larger air ducting not only improves air distribution, efficiency, and performance, but a lower pressure also reduces noise levels.
Certain climate controls have been integrated into the 11.6-inch infotainment display screen. Demister and temperature controls remain as physical buttons for quick access, while all other controls are now digital buttons.
SEATS
To assist with improving vehicle ergonomics and driver and occupant comfort, Subaru worked in collaboration with a medical school to study the structure and movement of the human body.
Based on the results of this study, the seats were redesigned to support the pelvis through structures that restrain the sacrum and reduce transmission of shaking of the head.
A new mounting structure between the seat and the chassis has also been adopted to reduce seat swaying and improve ride quality. For the all-new Subaru Crosstrek, the seat rail has been mounted directly to the chassis.
Direct mounting has increased the rigidity of the mounting parts and improved vibration dampening, resulting in approximately 44 per cent reduction in head swaying (passenger seat) compared to the previous generation Subaru XV.

ENGINEERING
ENGINE
Two powertrains are available for the all-new Subaru Crosstrek. An enhanced 2.0-litre direct injection FB20 Boxer engine, and an e-Boxer with electric motor assistance, delivering additional battery-based power to provide responsive and linear acceleration.
The engine in both powertrains utilises a fuel system that injects directly into the combustion chambers, and a high thermodynamically efficient compression ratio.
Maximum power, and more importantly the broad, flat torque curve, has been retained for consistent pulling power in the range typical of overtaking and when the vehicle is loaded for those fun adventures.
There have been several improvements made to refine performance in the all-new Crosstrek. These include revisions to the auxiliary belt system (petrol-only), engine mounts, and engine block rigidity, which all lead to a decrease in vibration and an increase in passenger comfort.
e-Boxer mild hybrid system
Hybrid Crosstrek variants feature Subaru's hybrid electric power unit system that combines Motor Assist with two of Subaru's core technologies – Boxer engine and Symmetrical AWD.
The electric motor is placed near the vehicle's centre of gravity, while the battery and other components are placed above the rear axle, allowing the lowest possible centre of gravity and balanced front/rear vehicle weight distribution.
The system includes a 2.0-litre direct injection petrol Boxer engine, an electric motor inbuilt in the rear of the CVT, and a 118.4-volt battery placed under the rear cargo floor.
A prime benefit of an electric motor is its ability to produce high levels of torque instantaneously, providing enhanced driveability and engagement. Motor Assist helps enhance X-Mode's rough road capability, for example, by enabling easy torque control at low speeds over tough terrain.
TRANSMISSION
An enhanced Lineartronic® Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) with over 80 per cent of components altered (compared to previous generation XV) features across the petrol-only range, resulting in improved drivability and enjoyment.
The gear ratio coverage range of the Lineartronic® CVT petrol-only variants has been increased from 7.0 to 8.1.
The increased gear ratio improves response due to a lower first gear (4.066 vs 3.601) and improves efficiency as the result of a higher overdrive top gear (0.503 vs XV's 0.513). Reverse gear is also lower (4.379 vs. XV's 3.689) for better hill climbing.
All-new Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid variants, which feature the e-Boxer engine, are equipped with the TH580 Lineartronic® CVT with 7-speed manual mode.
The CVT features a coverage range of 7.0 with the start of the gear ratio range at 3.601 and the top of the ratio range at 0.513.
Via revision of variant parts, including optimisation of chain guide rod rigidity to reduce chain noise and enlargement of the clutch baffle to reduce oil agitation resistance, vibration and noise have been reduced.
SI-DRIVE AND AUTO STEP SHIFT CONTROL
SI-Drive and Auto step control have been retained for the all-new Subaru Crosstrek to provide a more engaging and enjoyable drive option.
At low throttle openings gear change is infinitely variable as in a conventional CVT, but at higher throttle openings it automatically adopts an eight-speed step control.
This creates a more conventional sound and feeling of acceleration with engine speed increase and decrease, as well as holding engine speed higher for a sportier and more engaging drive.
POWER STEERING
A dual pinion steering system has been adopted, which separates the drivers input and the electric power steering motor's input onto two separate shafts, which then each act on the steering rack.
Separating the load of the power steering motor off the primary input shaft reduces resistance against the driver's steering operation – resulting in a smoother and more linear torque transmission.
Hybrid variants feature a variable gear ratio (VGR) steering system, which varies the gear ratio according to the steering angle. This provides a softer steering response at low angle, to prevent unnecessary vehicle sway induced by the higher vehicle weight of hybrid variants (over petrol).
FRONT AND REAR SUSPENSION
Front and rear springs and dampers have been retuned and optimised for improved ride comfort and driving stability.
Recalibrated coil spring rates results in improved road bump absorption and body movement control.
To reduce the resistance of air flowing through the front suspension, the front subframe support has gained an aerodynamic cover, along with a slightly altered shape for controlling air flow.
A revised front stabiliser clamp provides greater retaining force for the stabiliser bushing during large suspension stroke, like when traversing over rough roads.
Rear suspension strength and durability has been improved by a redesigned rear subframe upper arm.
Reinforcement plates have also been added.
BRAKES
Front and rear disc brake callipers, brake booster and brake pads have been newly redeveloped to optimise brake pedal stroke with a higher rate of deceleration.
Copper-free materials have been utilised for front and rear brake pads, with a larger diameter calliper cylinder incorporated. Pad contact pressure and noise have also been reduced by chamfering the edges of the brake pads.
An electric brake booster has been adopted, which allows for excellent boosting characteristics, and greatly improves responsiveness during Pre-Collision Braking and Adaptive Cruise Control.
All Crosstrek variants feature an electric parking brake.
VEHICLE DYNAMICS
CHASSIS AND BODY
Underpinning the all-new Subaru Crosstrek is the Subaru Global Platform (SGP), which have been several advancements and improvements made to the SGP for the all-new Subaru Crosstrek, including the adoption of a full inner frame construction method, wider application of structural adhesive (~27m worth, compared to ~8m) and the increased rigidity of suspension mounting points.
These refinements allow the engine and suspension mounts to fully deliver on their intended function. Overall, the chassis torsional rigidity has been increased by ten per cent over the previous model.
X-MODE
All Crosstrek variants feature X-Mode as standard, available via the touch of a button, and is a valuable feature for those who enjoy off-road adventures and provides increased confidence and safety when driving in challenging terrain.
X-Mode enhances the vehicle's off-road capability by optimising various systems to provide better traction and control in challenging driving conditions. When activated, X-Mode adjusts the engine output, transmission settings, AWD system, and other parameters to provide better traction and stability when driving on slippery surfaces, such as mud, snow or gravel.
X-Mode is a low-speed operating system that operates below 40 km/h and has two modes:
- Deep Snow/Mud: Turns off traction control and switches the engine management computer to quickly generate maximum torque when accelerating, causing the wheels to spin and slip. This allows tyres to easily escape when they become bogged in deep snow, sand or mud.
- Snow/Dirt: Turns on traction control; engine torque delivery is smooth and progressive to prevent sudden engine power causing wheel slip. This mode is most suited to slippery snow-covered roads, black ice, gravel and unpaved surfaces like riverbeds and pebbles.
At low speeds (under 20 km/h) Hill Descent Control helps maintain the speed the vehicle is travelling at when the driver removes their foot from the accelerator or the brake pedal, to allow the driver to fully concentrate on steering.
Hill Descent Control can operate in both forward and reverse. Operation in reverse is particularly useful when forward movement up a steep incline becomes blocked, and the driver is required to reverse down.
Hill Descent Control is monitored and displayed on the Multi Information Display by the flashing of the green vehicle icon.
The X-Mode function enters standby mode when the vehicle speed is approximately 40 km/h or higher. It will automatically reactivate when the vehicle speed returns to a speed below approximately 35 km/h.
SUBARU SYMMETRICAL ALL-WHEEL DRIVE
As with all Subarus in Australia, except for BRZ, the all-new Subaru Crosstrek comes standard with Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive which provides a unique advantage.
A proven formula for decades, Subaru's legendary Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive firmly plants the vehicle to the road providing a safer, more engaging, and balanced driving experience on a variety of road conditions.
A key feature of the Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system is that it drives all the wheels, all the time, and there is never a time when all four wheels are not being driven to some degree.
As close as possible symmetrical vehicle weight distribution of front/rear split of 60/40 per cent also ensures as close as possible to equal traction on all four wheels to maximise total vehicle grip and therefore maintain vehicle momentum.
For the all-new Subaru Crosstrek, the Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system is mounted to a refined Subaru Global Platform which delivers a further ten per cent increase in torsional rigidity.
PACKAGING
CARGO SPACE
The all-new Subaru Crosstrek features a wide, flat load floor with a maximum cargo opening width of 1042mm, which is 3mm wider than the previous Subaru XV, enabling easier loading for cargo.

SAFETY
TOWARDS ZERO
Subaru has always been dedicated to prioritising safety in all its vehicles, and this commitment is evident in its unwavering focus on integrating advanced safety features across the entire model line-up.
Subaru Corporation's unwavering commitment to vehicle safety and pursuit to achieve zero fatal road accidents in a Subaru vehicle by 20306 continues with the all-new Subaru Crosstrek.
Each variant throughout the all-new Subaru Crosstrek range comprises a robust set of safety systems across Subaru's four key safety pillars – Primary, Active, Preventative and Protective.
- Primary safety: Forward and rear visibility is excellent in the all-new Subaru Crosstrek. Despite a revised exterior design with sleek sharp lines, the superseded XV's impressive A-pillar blind spot visibility and side upper field of view have been retained for the new model. Excellent rear vision allows one-metre-high objects being able to be seen from just 1.8m behind the vehicle.
- Active safety: Subaru's unique Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive provides excellent overall vehicle balance, delivering outstanding traction from all four wheels even in more challenging conditions. Always on All-Wheel Drive effectively provides double the traction capacity compared to Two-Wheel Drive vehicles.
- Preventative safety: All Subaru Crosstrek variants are equipped with Subaru's latest generation EyeSight® Driver Assistance System. This system uses high resolution stereo colour cameras, and a wide-angle monocular camera that can recognise potential dangers and obstacles ahead and can warn the driver to act or intervene. Depending on general visibility, it has a length of vision up to 130 metres.
- Protective safety: Several measures have been implemented, by way of body structure and occupant protection devices, in the all-new Subaru Crosstrek to help better protect all occupants in the case of collision. The emphasis is on occupant protection in real world accident situations and to provide occupant protection from all directions and all levels of impact severity.
With a strong belief that every driver and passenger deserve to arrive safely at their destination, Subaru has consistently pursued innovative safety technologies and design principals to minimise the risk of accidents and protect occupants in the event of collision.
PRIMARY SAFETY
Driver visibility is incredibly important from both a primary and active safety point of view, and the all-new Subaru Crosstrek has been carefully designed to minimise blind spots and provide excellent front and rear visibility which helps the driver become more aware of the road conditions and any potential obstacles.
Forward vision is maximised by retaining previous generation XV's A-pillar blind spot visibility as well as side upper field of view. Forward lower field of view has also been improved.
Rear vision is also excellent, with one-metre-high objects being able to be seen from just 1.8 metres behind the wheel. All Subaru Crosstrek variants are also equipped with an automatically engaged rear view reverse camera and Reverse Automatic Braking (RAB). These features combined are particularly important in helping avoid devastating injuries to children due to vehicle reversing in driveways.
ACTIVE SAFETY
The potential to prevent accidents, or reduce their severity, is strengthened through Subaru's unique Active Safety technologies. Two core components are Subaru's Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and the horizontally-opposed Boxer engine which has a lower centre of gravity than traditional engines – both unique Subaru attributes are pivotal factors for optimum balance, superior stability, and reduced body roll.
The all-new Subaru Crosstrek is equipped with Vehicle Dynamics Control, which also includes eight different stability and braking technologies, all designed to aid vehicle control in unexpected driving conditions.
Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC)
The all-new Subaru Crosstrek, much like all Subaru vehicles, is equipped with Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC). This is much more than just a different name for Electronic Stability Control (ESC).
In fact, VDC now has eight different stability and braking technologies, all designed to help maintain vehicle control in unexpected driving conditions. These include:
- Electronic Stability Control (ESC)
- Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS)
- Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD)
- Brake Assist
- Traction Control System (TCS)
- Active Torque Vectoring System
- Brake Override System
- Limited Slip Device (LSD)
PREVENTATIVE SAFETY
EyeSight® Driver Assist System
Subaru's latest generation EyeSight® Driver Assistance System is equipped to all Subaru Crosstrek variants.
This improved system uses high resolution stereo cameras, as well as a wide-angle monocular camera, that can recognise potential dangers and obstacles ahead and can warn the driver to act, or even automatically intervene in most instances. Depending on general visibility, the stereo cameras have a length of vision up to 130 metres.
Subaru's EyeSight® features the latest camera design, with the lens hood placed further forward towards the windscreen. This allows for a less obstructed field of view and a neater, slimline appearance.
Furthermore, the improved design also greatly reduces the chance of occupants unintentionally touching the camera's lenses – which can damage the camera and affect the system's performance.
Subaru EyeSight® Driver Assist system functions:
Pre-Collision Braking System: Autonomous emergency braking system that can detect objects directly in front of the vehicle using 3D stereo cameras. The system can calculate the distance to the preceding vehicle and relative speed difference. A wider angle of view with improved obstacle recognition has been achieved for the all-new Subaru Crosstrek with the use of a new wide angle monocular camera.
Pre-Collision Brake Assist: When Pre-Collision Braking System is activated (when the system determines that there is a high risk of collision with an obstacle in front), if the driver depresses the brake pedal, the system can determine an emergency braking scenario and can activate braking assist automatically, to provide greater braking force.
Lane Departure Prevention with Road Edge Lane Departure Prevention: If the vehicle is travelling within the controllable range and is about to deviate from its detected lane, the system can assist with steering control to prevent lane departure. If the vehicle is driven outsides the controllable range when the system is 'on' a warning sound is emitted and an indicator displayed in the instrument meter. The Road Edge Lane Departure Prevention function recognises boundaries outside the road, such as grass, and prevents the vehicle from departing the road – this system operates between approximately 60km/h and 100 km/h.
Emergency Lane Keep Assist: A warning sounds and a warning screen displays on the MID to alert the driver if the vehicle is about to deviate from its lane when adjacent following or oncoming vehicles are detected.
Unlike Lane Departure Prevention, Emergency Lane Keep Assist operates even if the driver uses the indicators to change lane.
Manual Speed Limiter: Controls engine torque or applies the brake to limit vehicle speed, if the driver is about to exceed the speed they set. Below the set speed, the driver controls the vehicle speed with the accelerator and brake in a normal way. 'Set speed' can be set from approximately 30 km/h to 145 km/h.
Lane Centring Function: Working in conjunction with Adaptive Cruise Control, this system identifies the lane markings of the lane the vehicle is travelling in. By controlling steering assistance, accelerator and brake functions, the vehicle's position is maintained near the centre of its lane.
Autonomous Emergency Steering: Adopted to support collision avoidance by performing automatic steering control in situations avoidance using only Pre-Collision Braking control may be difficult or insufficient. By using EyeSight® cameras and the rear radar system, the vehicle can determine presence or absence of surrounding vehicles and determine the suitability of evasive action. System requires at least 2.5m of clear space within the vehicle's lane beside the obstacle and must be travelling under 80 km/h.
Speed Sign Recognition with Intelligent Limiter: Recognises speed limit signs with stereo cameras and displays the detected speed limit on the Multi-Information Display unit to notify the driver. The Intelligent Speed Limiter automatically sets the vehicle speed limiter in accordance with the recognised speed limit - simply pressing 'SET' after pressing the 'LIM' switch activates this.

PROTECTIVE SAFETY
Protective Safety is further enhanced by the inclusion of 9 SRS5 airbags including, for the first time, the adoption of a new far side airbag, which focuses on protecting occupants in the event of an accident on the non-collision side from colliding with interior objects, and collisions between adjacent occupants.
Driver Monitoring System – Driver Focus (DMS)
Added, as standard, for the first time in Subaru's small SUV is the cutting-edge DMS which watches over the safety of the driver, in addition to providing added convenience.
This system monitors the driver's head area for displays of fatigued alertness, distraction, or eyes off the road. If any of these signs are identified, a warning is displayed on the MID and/or infotainment screen.
The DMS uses near infrared LED's and a camera that allows the vehicle to act as a watchful eye over the driver.
In addition, the facial recognition component of the system can register up to five people and will conveniently adjust certain driver preference settings depending on the face recognised in the driver seat. These preference settings include (dependant on variant):
- Climate control setting
- Last used MID screen
