The Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC) has named new generation Subaru Legacy (Liberty in Australia) as the 2015 Canadian Car of the Year.

The announcement was made at the Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto, following its selection in December as Canada's best new family car in the under-$30,000 category.

Legacy was one of four finalists vying for top honours, going on to beat the Hyundai Genesis, Mercedes-Benz C300 4MATIC and the Volkswagen Golf.

New Legacy delivers standout design, interior refinement and safety technology along with one of the roomiest interiors in the midsize sedan segment. It is also offers All-Wheel Drive as standard.

Like all Subaru models in North America, the Canadian specification Legacy is an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick and variants equipped with its EyeSight driver assist system have also earned a superior rating and Top Safety Pick Plus award.

"Subaru had an outstanding year in 2014," said Shiro Ohta, Chairman, President and CEO of Subaru Canada, Inc. "In the past year, Subaru sold a record number of vehicles and celebrated a new milestone in company history with unprecedented sales success. This award from AJAC is a wonderful tribute to the Subaru Legacy as well as to our recent achievements."

AJAC's Canadian Car of the Year Awards program includes real-world driving on public roads in order to provide consumers with sound, comparative information on vehicles that are new to the market. Journalist evaluations are based on detailed criteria, including everything from safety features to cargo capacity, in order to select the best new vehicles in various categories. The goal is, ultimately, to provide highly relevant consumer-driven information for Canadian shoppers to take with them in the marketplace.

The latest award follows the news earlier this week that Subaru was named Best Mainstream Brand for 2015 in Canada and also won four Canadian Residual Value Segment Awards from ALG, the country's industry benchmark for residual values and depreciation data.

Separately, the Subaru Outback earned a Canadian Black Book (CBB) Best Retained Value Award in the mid-size car segment for the sixth consecutive year.
