ENGINE
OVERVIEW
The 90%-new 2.5-litre direct injection four-cylinder horizontally-opposed Boxer engine offers increased combustion efficiency.
Compression ratio is increased and the exhaust-side Active Valve Control System (AVCS) adopted.
It offers increased power and torque of 136 Kilowatts (+7.9%) and 239 Newtonmetres (+1.7%) respectively, up from 126 kW and 235 Nm in the superseded 2.5-litre power plant.
Weight reduction of around 1.9 kg is achieved, while noise is also reduced.
Subaru has adopted its first-ever thermal management system. It manages engine heat to improve warm-up in the cold, for enhanced fuel economy and heating efficiency in the cabin.
THE FINE DETAIL CHANGES – producing efficiency and responsiveness
- CYLINDER BLOCK - Cylinder block strength is increased to suit the higher compression ratio of 12.0. Weight is also reduced by approximately 10%.
- JOURNAL PIECE - cast iron pieces are used for the #1 and #5 journals, limiting vibration and noise.
- CYLINDER LINER - Thickness is reduced from 2.2 mm to 1.5 mm and the shape of the alloy contact surface adjusted, improving adhesion to the cylinder block, preventing bore deformation and reducing oil consumption.
- WATER JACKET SPACER - The water jacket spacer is eliminated, saving weight, thanks to thermal management control optimizing liner temperature.
- CRANK BEARING - A molybdenum coating is added to all bearings (#1 to #5), improving fuel efficiency by reducing friction.
- CYLINDER HEAD - The port shape is redesigned for improved flow, while the combustion chamber is more compact.
- INTAKE PORT - Intake port shape is modified, improving air flow velocity and strengthening tumble flow, improving output and fuel efficiency.
- COMBUSTION CHAMBER - The shape is changed, to accommodate the increased compression ratio of 12.0.
- HEAD GASKET - The structure is revised and the seal strengthened, improving the opening's resistence to temperature difference inside and outside the engine, through thermal management control.
- PORT INTERNAL BAFFLE - A newly designed Tumble Generation Valve, made of weight-saving alloy; and port internal baffle, revise airflow through the intake, increasing flow into the cylinder, aiding fuel and environmental efficiency.
- OIL SPACER - A newly-added spacer reduces the oil volume required at oil change, in addition to improving engine warm-up and fuel efficiency.
- ROCKER COVER - The shape is changed, reducing noise and vibration. The resin material saves weight over the previous alloy.
- OIL PAN - The shape is changed and oil volume reduced, while the strainer is made of weight-saving resin.
- CRANKSHAFT - Thick parts of the web shape deemed unneccesary are removed and the front boss diameter decreased, reducing weight.
- PISTONS - Crown shape is changed to suit the increased compression ratio and direct injection. Fuel efficiency is improved by reducing weight and friction via changed pin diameter and coating material.
- PISTON RINGS - The top ring is changed to high thermal-conducting material, increasing combustion chamber temperature due to the higher compression ratio; also preventing engine knocking. In the top, second and oil rings, decreased tension also reduces friction.
- CONNECTING RODS - The shape is changed, reducing weight and limiting big end deformation.
- CRANKSHAFT SENSOR PLATE - It is thinner and the outer diameter reduced, saving weight and improving crank angle sensor detection.
- ACTIVE VALVE CONTROL SYSTEM - A thinner structure improves collision safety and reduces weight. A return spring is also added to the right intake to maintain the rotating speed of the cam.
- CHAIN COVER - Oil pump diameter is decreased, improving fuel efficiency by reducing friction when the oil pump is rotating. There is no change to output volume, due to increased width.
- CHAIN TENSIONER - Chain noise and vibration is reduced via a wider ratchet cam, while the alloy body saves weight.
- INTAKE/EXHAUST VALVES - Sodium-filled exhaust valves contribute to fuel efficiency and power output by increasing resistance to knocking, due to a higher cooling effect. Stem surface roughness and exhaust valves are optimized and friction reduced, improving fuel efficiency.
- VALVE SPRINGS - The shape is changed from cylindrical to conical, reducing weight.
- OIL LEVEL SWITCH - The switch size is reduced, saving weight. To improve detection accuracy, the method is changed from engine idling to engine stopped.

Helping reduce driver fatigue, AVH keeps Forester stationary when the driver's foot is removed from the brake pedal when the car is stopped; such as in congested traffic or on a hill.
SAFETY
PRIMARY SAFETY
VISIBILITY
Forester drivers can see dangers more easily when cornering, turning and reversing.
Subaru Corporation says the following visibility parameters are improved:
- Upper field of vision
- Side visibility
- A-pillar blind spot
- D-pillar blind spot
- Rear visibility of a one metre-tall object: As with all Subaru vehicles, Forester is designed so objects approximately one-metre tall – such as small children – can be seen from the driver's seat.
The excellent eye-level view and pillar design create a car with outstanding visibility on all sides, aiding safe manoeuvring.
SEATS
The front seat shape supports a natural driving posture to minimize driver fatigue and securely support occupants. The cushions are made of a low-resiliance foam, which also absorbs low-level vibrations.
INSTRUMENTS
The driver's core instrument cluster is designed to minmize distraction. Displays, such as the MFD in the centre of the dashboard, are linked, to show pertinent information and minimize driver's line-of-sight movement.
The three main displays are:
- DRIVER'S INSTRUMENTS – including the Mulit-Information Display (MID), for key information when driving, in an easy-to-understand format.
- MFD (upper centre dashboard) - graphically displays vehicle status, driving support etc.
- INFOTAINMENT DISPLAY (centre console) - displays navigation, audio and entertainment information.
EYESIGHT ASSIST MONITOR – windscreen display
EyeSight status and warnings are displayed on the windscreen. The driver can gain a quicker understanding of the current situation - and take steps to avoid dangers - because warnings/displays can be recognized without taking eyes off the surrounding road environment.
The display is easy to understand, as the colour and flashing cycle changes according to the danger level.
EyeSight Assist Monitor LED operation specifications:
- Red, simultaneous flash: Pre-collision primary brake, increased braking required warning, vehicle distance warning, pre-collision secondary brake and AT acceleration control for automatic transmission.

STEERING RESPONSIVE HEADLIGHTS (SRH)
SRH are added to every Forester.
The headlight beams move to match the steering input when cornering or at intersections, lighting up the direction that the vehicle is travelling, improving visibility at night.
ADAPTIVE DRIVING BEAM (ADB – Forester 2.5i-L, 2.5i Premium and 2.5i-S)
EyeSight monitors the area in front of the car and automatically adjusts brightness and high beam range, helping maintain the driver's line of vision and making obstacles easier to spot, while also preventing dazzling.
ACTIVE SAFETY
ACTIVE TORQUE VECTORING (ATV)
Forester features ATV control, enhancing driver confidence.
It is optimized so when Forester is turning, Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) applies brakes to the inner wheels, diverting more power to the outer wheels – producing better turning and more stable driving.
The system acquires input signals from the VDC indicating steering wheel angle, yaw rate and transverse acceleration. This is in addition to conventional control information, comprising input torque and differential speed compensation, based on individual wheel speed.
The result is improved initial steering behaviour and vehicle control in tight corner braking.
Wheel spin is reduced when accelerating on snow-covered or slippery roads.
The Transmission Control Unit (TCU) responds to conditions such as acceleration, climbing and turning, adjusting torque distribution in real time.
Whenever front wheel slipping is detected, rear wheel torque is increased, ensuring sufficient traction.
PREVENTATIVE SAFETY
EYESIGHT – THIRD GENERATION
Every Forester features the latest third generation EyeSight driver assist system.
Stereo camera images are in colour and the recognition is optimized, enabling "vision" of multiple items simultaneously.
Added to the previous Forester EyeSight functions is Emergency Lane Keep Assist (LKA).
LKA can help prevent accidents if a driver unwittingly starts drifting into another lane.
The system also adds:
- LANE CENTREING CONTROL AND PRECEDING VEHICLE ADAPTIVE STEERING CONTROL - When driving at speeds up to approximately 120 km/h, the system assists steering operation to keep the vehicle near the lane centre.
- MANUAL SPEED LIMITER - Controls torque or applies brakes if the driver is about to exceed the speed they set.
Other EyeSight highlights include:
- Enhanced pedestrian avoidance
- Pre-Collision Braking Assist
"Tracking" performance:
- Advanced performance of Adaptive Cruise Control (Brake light recognition etc.)
Stereo camera
Third generation EyeSight uses a CMOS camera, with higher resolution than the conventional CCD, enabling recognition of even low-contrast objects.
Stereo camera performance and the 3D image processing engine are improved for faster and more accurate object recognition.
Longer distances and wider angles are covered for easier distance recognition and on either side.
Control accuracy and stability are improved at all speeds, together with pedestrian pre-collision detection performance.
The CMOS camera and enhanced control logic provide greater operational stability during poor weather conditions too.
The physical structure is also revised, with the camera closer to the windscreen glass, with less overhang.
The increased recognition area of the camera, combined with colour recognition, means a larger number of potential obstacles can be recognized simultaneously.
Pre-collision Braking
Operation range of Pre-collision Braking is expanded, allowing earlier object recognition. Impact avoidance performance is improved through better control.
The speed difference criteria for collision with a vehicle in front is expanded from a maximum of 30 km/h to a maximum of 50 km/h, for enhanced collision prevention.
Brake light and object recognition are improved, even at relatively high speeds, and when the vehicle in front decelerates rapidly. This allows faster activation of primary brake control and increases the collision avoidance area.
Adaptive Cruise Control
EyeSight's expanded recognition area improves tracking performance, with vehicles recognized at longer distances and wider angles, particularly on multi-lane roads and when vehicles cut in during traffic jams.
Instrument panel
Clear visual and audible warnings alert the driver to potential hazards detected by EyeSight.
Emergency Stop Signal (ESS)
ESS activates the hazard lights when making an emergency stop, warning vehicles behind of sudden braking. ESS activates at approximately 60 km/h higher.
OTHER PREVENTATIVE SAFETY FUNCTIONS
EMERGENCY LANE KEEP ASSIST
This function controls steering assist, preventing lane departure. Also, warnings display on the screen and an alert sounds if EyeSight or the car sensors detect the approach of an oncoming vehicle in the adjacent lane, or directly behind, when the driver is about to change lanes.
FRONT VIEW MONITOR (FVM) - Forester 2.5i-L, 2.5i Premium, 2.5i-S
The FVM helps prevent collisions at intersections and complements the Side View Monitor (SVM) in the suite of Vision Assist features.
The FVM uses images from a camera mounted at the front of the vehicle - in the centre of the grille, below the emblem. Images can be shown on the MFD to check for approaching vehicles or pedestrians at intersections with poor visibility, parking facing a wall or other scenarios. It enables the driver to check for blind spots in front of the car, which could help avoid accidents at intersections.
The front view screen can be displayed by pushing the VIEW buttion in the centre console. It automatically switches back to the FVM when shifting from R to another position, for added convenience when parking.
FVM and SVM screens can be displayed simultaneously.
SIDE VIEW MONITOR (SVM) – Forester 2.5i-L, 2.5i Premium, 2.5i-S
A camera is added to the passenger side door mirror and the image displayed on the MFD screen. Objects in the blind spot are easier to see, improving safety. SVM is also a fantastic aid to avoid "kerbing" alloy wheels.
REVERSE AUTOMATIC BRAKING (RAB) – Forester 2.5i-L, 2.5i Premium, 2.5i-S
RAB is a new assist system offering drivers greater peace-of-mind and safety when reversing the vehicle.
Four sonar sensors installed on the rear bumper detect obstructions when reversing.
If there is the risk of an impact, the system alerts the driver. If the driver does not apply the brakes or take any other evasive action, the system applies the brakes automatically, helping avoid or reduce the severity of a collision.
The operating condition of the system is displayed on the infotainment screen. The system operates in tandem with the rear view camera, making it easier for drivers to check the condition of the vehicle.
The head unit alerts the driver with displays and warning sounds according to the distance from an object behind the vehicle, such as a wall.
An icon displayed on the screen can be used to switch the RAB function and warning sound function ON/OFF.
Upper speed limit for operation is approximately 15 km/h or less and Impact avoidance target speed is approximately 8 km/h or less.
RAB is activated under the following conditions:
- Selection lever is in R
- Vehicle speed is approximately 1.5 to 15 km/h
Operating alerts
- Phase 1: Acceleration suppression: Alarm = series of short beeps
- Phase 2: Automatic brake operation: Alarm = Long beep
- Hold Position cancelled: Alarm = four short beeps.
Hold Position is cancelled if the driver uses either the brake pedal or accelerator pedal, or two seconds have elapsed after stopping.
DRIVER MONITORING SYSTEM - DRIVER FOCUS (DMS)
For added convenience and safety, Driver Focus debuts in Forester 2.5i-L, 2.5i Premium and 2.5i-S.
This advanced system – the first in a mainstream model – not only has the potential to monitor for signs of driver distraction and/or drowsiness, but if detected, automatically alerts them.
In Forester 2.5i-L, DMS recognizes driver preferences for air conditioning and some instrument displays.
In Forester 2.5i Premium and 2.5i-S, DMS also sets-up recognized driver preferences for door mirrors and driver's seat.
A dedicated infrared LED camera installed in the visor of the Multi-Function Display, recognizes a registered driver's face and constantly monitors the driver's seat area, whilst the vehicle is in operation.
Up to five drivers can be registered and the cabin environment tailored to their preferences.
A warning illuminates in the instrument cluster and on the MFD to alert both driver and passengers if the system detects that either the driver's gaze has wandered, or the driver is showing signs of fatigue or drowsiness.
This may be indicated by several factors, including face orientation, opening degree of eyes and the timeframe.
A personalised greeting displays on the MFD on start-up and actual fuel consumption achieved can be displayed for each registered driver.
FUNCTIONS
- DISTRACTION WARNING - While driving, if the system detects that the driver continues to face a direction outside the set range (not facing the road), the system interprets a wandering gaze.
- DOZING/DROWSINESS WARNING - Dozing off is presumed if the system detects that the driver is continually closing their eyes while driving. Drowsiness is presumed by calculating the time ratio the driver's eyes are closed. Two levels may be detected: drowsy and extremely drowsy.
- PERSONAL RECOGNITION - this is performed in conjunction with the doors opening and closing. When the driver is seated and recognition complete, the recognized registered driver's name is displayed graphically on the Multi-Function Display. In Forester 2.5i-L, 2.5i Premium and 2.5i-S, once recognized, the driver's preferred content is displayed in the instrument cluster and air conditioning settings are automatically set and synched to the recognized driver. In Forester 2.5i Premium and 2.5i-S, it also sets the driver's preferred seat position and door mirror angles. Personal registration set up is performed on the MFD (in the customization screen), using the steering wheel INFO switch while the ignition is on.
DMS can be switched off.
DMS will not recognize driver distraction, fatigue or drowsiness in all circumstances. In order to work effectively, the DMS requires the vision of its infrared LED camera to be unimpeded. DMS functionality may be reduced or excluded if the driver's face and/or eyes are not clearly visible, such as if the driver is wearing a face covering, hat, spectacles or dark or polarised sunglasses. There are other limits to the DMS capability and performance. These are described more fully in the Owner's Manual.
DMS COMPONENT LOCATION
The infrared camera and associated DMS parts are laid out in the visor of the MFD.
AUTO DIPPING DOOR MIRROR – Forester 2.5i Premium and 2.5i-S
The passenger door mirror is interlocked with reverse gear selection and tilts downwards to ensure visiblity of the rear tyre area, making it easier to check the blind spot. During this sequence, the driver's preferred mirror position is also memorized by the DMS.
DOOR MIRRORS
For added convenience, all Foresters have power folding and heated mirrors. In Forester 2.5i Premium and 2.5i-S, the mirrors automaitcally fold when the car is locked.
PASSIVE SAFETY
Subaru anticipate a high five-star rating for occupant safety when Forester is tested by the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) – in line with the entire Subaru new car range.
The body structure is optimized and high-tensile steel panels arranged to limit weight increases, while improving all aspects of front, side and rear collision safety.
Use of high-tensile steel is up 5% to 53% of the body.
COLLISION SAFETY
The body structure uses strategically-located high-tensile steel panels to help protect occupants from all angles – front, rear, sides and offset.
FRONTAL COLLISIONS
Changes are made to provide protection against small overlap and oblique offset collisions.
Increased front frame resistance, for better energy absorption efficiency, results from multiple advances including:
- Front frame cross-section resistance increased by 20%
- Higher cabin strength
- Framework layout changed to better distribute load
- Framework added under the floor
- Hot press materials used for the front side frame
- Transmission tunnel front section constructed with stronger outer shell
- Rear seat polypropylene foam and supporting material under the cushion combine with a structure to maintain passenger position.
SIDE COLLISIONS
Chassis framework is strengthened and longitudinal deformation reduced, improving safety during side collisions.
REAR COLLISIONS
High-tensile steel panel and hot press materials are used for the rear bumper beam, reducing weight by 3 kg.
LOW SPEED COLLISIONS
The crushable zone of the front end of the frame is expanded to increase absorption. This helps reduce frame damage and repair costs.
TYRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM (TPMS)
All Foresters feature the TPMS, with driver information available on the MID.
The system identifies individual tyres with low pressure, from the ABS wheel speed counter and RF transmission frequency.
MANUAL SPEED LIMITER
This new function controls torque or applies the brakes if the driver is about to exceed a previously-set speed, reducing driver burden.
AIRBAGS
Every Forester has dual front, side, curtain and driver's knee SRS airbags.
SEATBELTS
A locking tongue is used in the front and back (outer) seats, better restraining passengers, to help reduce injury levels during a collision.
An adaptive function for selecting optimum energy absorption load for the seat belt, uses the seat position detection sensor and passenger detection sensor to determine the passenger's body type.
DOUBLE PRETENSIONER
Pretensioners are used for the front seats, increasing restraining force during a collision.
REAR SEATBELTS WITH PRETENSONERS AND FORCE LIMITERS
Force limiters increase restraining force during a collision.
LINEARTRONIC CONTINUOUSLY VARIABLE TRANSMISSION
The ultra-reliable Lineartronic™ CVT has undergone multiple refinements for the latest Forester generation.
Both driving and environmental performance are improved via lower friction and weight reduction.
Dynamic quality is also enhanced through sporty acceleration, thanks to better intermediate response and reduced noise and vibration.
Drivability benefits from the seven-speed manual mode, while improved operation results from a change to detent characteristics, producing an even better feel when using the shifter.
The fine detail changes include:
- CHAIN VARIATOR - A shorter chain pitch reduces noise and vibration, improving fuel efficiency and driving performance. Ratio coverage is expanded from 6.2 to 7.0 and initial acceleration improved, plus fuel efficiency during high-speed cruising.
- OIL PUMP - Reducing noise and vibration, the tooth profile, housing rigidity and gear ratios are all modified.
- REDUCED CASE WEIGHT - Strength and rigidity are optimized, while converter and transmission case noise and vibration are reduced.
- REDUCTION GEAR - The support structure is changed from ball bearings to rollers and thrust bearings, improving rigidity and reducing noise and vibration. Weight is reduced by integrating the gears and shaft of the reduction gears. A proprietary design for the teeth shape also reduces noise and vibration.
- TORQUE CONVERTER - A lower rigidity damper reduces noise and vibration, and aids fuel efficiency.
- REVERSE BRAKE FACING - The groove shape of facing materials is changed, reducing friction and improvng fuel efficiency. Clearance to shift is also reduced, improving response.
- FRONT DIFFERENTIAL - The case structure is changed to feature a single welded unit and the baffle shape optimized to reduce stirring resistance.
- SEVEN-SPEED MANUAL MODE - Manual mode transmission steps increase from six to seven, using expanded ratio coverage, increasing driving enjoyment.
- SELECTOR FEEL- Manual plate detent shape is changed and bearings added to the spring joints, increasing smooth operation between R, N and D.
CHASSIS AND BODY
STEERING
Thanks to the Subaru Global Platform, outstanding steering stability enhances safety - including hazard avoidance – straight-line stability and responsive cornering, with minimized sway.
- STEERING COLUMN - The collapsible stroke is expanded to improve passenger protection in a collision. It has larger tilt and telescopic adjustment. Tilt improves from 42 mm to 54 mm and telescopic from 40 mm to 55 mm.
- STEERING GEARBOX - Variable Gear Ratio (VGR) is adopted, for responsive handling and stability.
SUSPENSION – changes aid NVH, control and stability
- FRONT - Added K-shape brace improves lateral flexural rigidity, for improved steering accuracy and response. Enhancing stability during vehicle roll, stabilizer mounting position is changed from the front arm to strut. The suspension cross member structure is changed, increasing suspension/engine mount rigidity, suppressing steering system vibration.
- Supressed steering system vibration: mass offset is reduced 14%
- Front struts/mounts: Input-separated mounts reduce noise and vibration, and improve control and stability
- Load axis control coils: reduce friction
- New rubber sheet structure and dust cover: prevent dust penetration.
- REAR - Non coupled subframe bushes, stablilizer directly mounted to chassis and input-separated mounts: improve noise, vibration, control and stability.
- Rear subframe structure changes: increase rear suspension rigidity, for better steering accuracy and response
- Dynamic geometry changed: improved steering response
- Housing material changed to alloy: improved fuel efficiency via weight reduction
- Damper characteristics: Friction control and damping force are optimized, reducing vibration and enhancing control and stability.
BRAKES
The braking stroke area is shortened to combine with a solid pedal feel.
- Improved rigidity of the front caliper cylinder - reduces the stroke area with no braking; booster characteristics are optimized and the Electronic Parking Brake introduced.
- Master cylinder/brake booster - optimized and a relative pressure vacuum sensor used, due to introduction of brake assistance control.
- Lighter front brake system parts help reduce weight.
BODY
The highly-rigid body produces an excellent balance between driving performance, NVH and comfort, while adopting top-class collision safety.
Ride comfort is enhanced through suppression of road surface vibration, improving drive quality.
High frequency engine and transmission noise are minimized through use of sound-absorbing material.
The streamlined frame structure and stronger joints between various parts, increase torsional rigidity and disperse resonance and distortion. Reduction of low frequency vibration in parts such as the steering wheel, floor and seat back, help reduce driver fatigue.
SUBARU GLOBAL PLATFORM (SGP)
OVERVIEW
The Subaru Global Platform is the fundamental technology that underpins next-generation models such as Forester, together with the core technologies of the horizontally-opposed Boxer engine, Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and EyeSight driver assist.
Subaru Corporation say the platform offers "dynamic quality" that goes beyond high-performance, to engage emotionally with vehicle occupants.
It delivers a new level of superior driving capability, with smooth performance and outstanding drivability.
The SGP offers a distinct Subaru style of dynamic quality, producing a well-balanced vehicle with incredible driver response, no uncomfortable vibrations or noises, while delivering premium ride comfort.
Body and chassis rigidity are increased significantly over previous generation Forester and huge improvements are made to the suspension and associated systems.
Forester responds accurately to the driver's steering input. Unnecessary steering corrections are eliminated and the vehicle maintains a road-hugging stance.
This level of sophisticated drivability even factors in future autonomous driving that will demand excellent straight-line stability.
The platform produces minimal vibrations or noises. A streamlined frame structure and stronger joints between various parts, are some of the improvements that increase torsional rigidity throughout the body.
High frequency sounds from the engine and transmission are largely shut out. Road noise is also reduced with the use of the input-separated mount suspension layout, and a high-rigidity chassis, considerably reducing cabin noise.
The design effectively disperses chassis resonance and distortion to significantly cut back vibrations from the steering system, floor and seats. The result is a comfort level that well exceeds its class.
Increasing the rigidity of suspension installation points allows the system to absorb shocks sufficiently, without flexing the body - producing a level of ride comfort that hides uneven road surfaces.
It delivers excellent ride comfort by effectively suppressing vibrations from the road surface and damping vibrations as quickly as possible, when driving over bumps.
Mounting the rear stabilizers directly to the chassis also helps reduce body vibrations by 50 per cent, compared to the superseded model.
Detail changes in the new platform include piping ports, that previously passed through the cabin interior structure, now moved to the outside, adding foot space front and rear. The vertical plate of the side sill is positioned further out, increasing floor width.
The SGP offers linear response to driver input, such as acceleration and braking. Less body roll during cornering provides outstanding dynamic quality, greatly enhancing driving enjoyment and peace-of-mind.
All occupants can take comfort with the reassurance and enjoyable driving experience that Forester provides.
Control and stability is also excellent, with no unstable body roll when driving through corners.
The outcome of these improvements: a flat, comfortable ride.
