A versatile and practical option

As the success of the Peugeot 207 goes from strength to strength, with the hatch back range launched along with the much anticipated 207GTi and the iconic 207CC, the final chapter of the 207 story is now here.

The Touring completes the 207 range and is introduced in Australia just 8 months after the launch of the hatchback. This compares to four years between the launch of the 206 hatchback and the 206 Touring. (not offered in Australia)

Potential customers and target market

The 207 Touring will be launched into a market segment characterised by ever increasing fragmentation of the individual models. It is aimed at customers who appreciate the space and versatility offered by this type of vehicle.

Keen on outdoor leisure pursuits, these customers – ranging from young families to those in active retirement.

Even more 207

The 207 Touring guarantees potential customers all the recognised qualities of the 207 but, with added extras, such as:

  • An increase in the overall length compared to the hatchback - 4.156 m, i.e. 119 mm longer all in the rear overhang, providing more interior space.
  • An internal brightness strengthened by the enormous panoramic glass roof. An electrically-operated sun blind limits the brightness as required.
  • An easily accessible luggage area with a capacity of 428 litres which is 118 litres more than the 207 hatchback.
  • Rear modularity that allows the user to easily adapt the rear load area to suit their individual requirements – just one hand is needed to fold down the rear seats which then fold automatically to form a totally flat load area.
  • The opening rear tailgate glass.
  • A three-section parcel shelf allowing access to the contents of the boot – from the rear seats, the tailgate glass or, more traditionally, the rear tailgate itself.
  • More space in the back (both headroom and leg room) enabling greater use of the rear seats.

Dimensions

The length of the 207 Touring is 4.156 m. Since the front overhang and wheelbase is shared with the hatchback, the difference compared with the hatchback is an increase of 119 mm in the rear overhang.

The width of 1.748 m (measured at the level of the door handles) is the same as that of the 207 hatchback.

The height is 1.527 m, which is an increase of 55 mm to that of the 207 hatchback.

Engines, Suspension, Steering, Brakes

At launch the 207 Touring will be available with the choice of two engines, a 1.6 litre petrol engine or a 1.6 HDi turbo- diesel engine.

Petrol engine

The petrol engine featured in the 207 Touring is the result of the co-operation between PSA Peugeot Citroën and the BMW Group.

1.6 litre 16v VTi: 88kW - EP6

The 1.6 litre 16 v petrol engine (EP6) produces a maximum power of 88kW and a torque of 160 Nm at 4250 rpm.

The torque, however, is produced very uniformly, because even at only 2000 rpm the engine produces 88% of its maximum torque. This ensures excellent driveability as well as reduced fuel consumption and emissions.

This engine is only available with an automatic gearbox with Porsche Tiptronic sequential control.

HDi diesel engine

From launch, the 207 TOURING will be available with the option of a HDi diesel engine. With a capacity of 1.6 litres, it is part of the "downsizing" strategy of the PSA Peugeot Citroën group, which aims to reduce both engine capacity and fuel consumption, while at the same time preserving the overall dynamic performance.

With an aluminium block, a 16-valve cylinder head and an air to air, intercooler, it also benefits from a second generation common rail high pressure (1600 bar) direct injection system with injection nozzles with six, very small diameter holes to ensure the optimum air/fuel mixture.

1.6 litre 16v HDi DPFS: 80kW – DV6TED4

This engine has a power output of 80kW and a torque of 240 Nm at 1750 rpm. It can, however, achieve 260 Nm temporarily in the top three gears thanks to the "overboost" function. This version is equipped with a variable geometry turbo charger.

Also equipped with a diesel particulate filter system (DPFS), this engine makes the 207 Touring particularly environmentally friendly.

Suspension…

To ensure good road holding and comfort the Touring has a very rigid structure combined with a wide front and rear track and high quality Peugeot shock absorbers.

The suspension layout of the 207 hatchback has been adapted to the specific characteristics of the 207 Touring – its longer rear overhang and its larger load area compared to the hatchback.

Modifications

  • The geometry of the pseudo McPherson front suspension is taken over from the hatchback. The specific features relating to the 207 Touring with the petrol engine concern the anti-roll bar, the modified shock absorber settings, the slightly greater flexibility of the springs. The HDi model retains those of the hatchback.
  • The rear torsion beam of the rear suspension is responsible for the anti-roll function and has a different stiffness depending on the engine fitted. The likely possibility that heavier loads will be carried in the back, has resulted in specific shock absorber settings as well as stiffer springs on the versions equipped with the HDi engine.
  • The electric power assisted steering parameters have also been adapted for the 207 Touring to offer precision and comfort of use under all circumstances.
  • At launch the 207 Touring is equipped with 16" wheels with 195/55R16 tyres.

Steering

Optimised "brushless" electric power steering enhances the 207 Touring's versatility, both in town and on the open road.

This technology makes it possible to modulate the power steering continuously and independently of engine speed, ensuring a smoother transition from high assistance at low speed to reduced assistance at high speed.

It also makes it possible to improve centring around the straight ahead or "zero position", thanks to its low response time and optimised electronic management.
Manoeuvrability is enhanced by a turning circle between kerbs of 10.60 m.

Brakes

The front braking is guaranteed by 283 x 26 mm discs on all models, and at the back, 249 x 9 mm discs are used.

The 207 Touring benefits from excellent active safety equipment with ABS, electronic brake force distribution (EBFD) and emergency brake assist (EBA).

Protecting the occupants

The 207 Touring benefits from the Euro NCAP 5 Star structure of the 207 and with its increased dimensions makes it very able to withstand impacts.

In respect of head-on collisions the Touring benefits from: the double impact energy absorption system from the 407 (which also protects pedestrians), stabilisers limiting the backward movement of the chassis legs, an impactor limiting the rearward movement of the engine unit and a retractable steering column.

The above is complemented by two adaptive front airbags and five three-point inertia seat belts with load limiters set to 450 daN for the front and 600 daN for the rear outer seats.

For side impacts, the 207 Touring has the structural features of the hatchback, but the dimensions of the floor pan have been adapted to the new silhouette. The door reinforcements – box sections, tubular impact protection bars and padding and the side and curtain airbags complete the side impact protection.
A great deal of attention has also been paid to high speed rear-end impacts in order to preserve the passenger compartment and limit potential injuries. Impact absorbers located between the rear chassis legs and the rear bumper impact beam provide added protection.

In addition, the rear head restraints are mounted on curved supports, so the distance between the occupant's head and the head restraint can be optimised.

For child protection, two Isofix three-point mountings are fitted to the rear outer seats.

As in the hatchback, all the 207 Tourings have visual warnings if the seat belts are not fastened or are unfastened during use.

The 207 Touring – in detail
Designed by the Peugeot Design Centre the 207 Touring with its stylish lines creates a compact balanced shape.

From the design of the front it shares with the hatchback, this original design with its bold expressive lines combines a number of stylish design features: a large glazed surface area, rear quarter panels reminiscent of those of the 407 Touring and a two-colour "arrow" profile created between the rear quarter panel and the elongated ruby-red rear lights. And at the back, the promise of accessible space and durability makes a powerful comparison to the front and helps create the equilibrium of the design.

The true signature of the 207 Touring is the completely red rear light assemblies with their smooth lenses and diode-effect with metallised segmenting of the five lighting functions.

The rear lights give the appearance of cut rubies and seem to support the large dark tinted rear tailgate glass.

The standard fitment of roof bars and the large glass panoramic roof both add a touch of originality and style.

Structure

The 207 Touring, together with the other 207 silhouettes all share the PSA Peugeot Citroën group's No 1 platform.

The 207 Touring shares much of the structure of the hatchback – the design of the front, the floor pan, the substructure as far back as the B posts (except the roof), but includes a number of specific features:

  • an innovative folding mechanism for the rear seats.
  • an extended version of the 207 CC rear floor structure. To improve loading capacity and adaptability - a major feature of this type of vehicle.
  • to reconcile the demands of design and space, the roof profile and length are specific to this silhouette (and the large glass panoramic roof).
  • to provide easy access to the load area, the 207 Touring has a new enclosed rear aperture structure that also increases overall rigidity.
  • to ensure the dynamism and originality of the design, a specific superstructure with inverted rear quarter panels and triangular rear windows combined with a generous curved rear tailgate glass have been used.
  • for the equilibrium of the design, the rear doors originate from the five-door hatchback as far as the window line, but are slightly more vertical at the top to increase the glazed area and side vision.
  • to increase the practicality of the design, the tailgate has a glass that can be opened independently.

Finally, to ensure good performance in terms of repairability, the boot floor is made from steel with high elastic properties and special 100 mm impact absorbers are fitted between the rear bumper impact beam and the rear structure.

Added all together, the above creates a structure that offers very good performance in terms of rigidity. For a force of 100 daN applied to the axles, the torsional rigidity is 0.9 mrad.

Interior dimensions

The specific profile of the glass panoramic roof – and the fact that it slopes further at the back compared with the hatchback improves rear headroom:

  • In the front, there is a 17 mm gain in interior space
  • In the back, the new arrangement of the seats raises them 20 mm compared with the hatchback, thereby creating an "amphitheatre" effect that improves the passengers' forward view, but there is still a noticeable increase in the headroom inside the vehicle - 24 mm in fact – compared with the hatchback.

Not only are the rear seats raised, but their locating points have been moved back 15 mm, increasing the passenger compartment length to 1694 mm (compared with 1675 mm in the hatchback) and also providing more rear leg room.

The other interior dimensions remain exactly the same as those of the hatchback.

Guaranteed panoramic view

A glass panoramic roof, which was not available on the 206 Touring, is now a standard feature on the 207 Touring.

Regardless of where they are sitting, the lack of a visual barrier between the sky or the stars gives the passengers of the 207 Touring a feeling of space and freedom. As with the hatchback, the trimmed panel surrounding the sun visors and the roof console seem to minimise the bulk of the roof cross member. However, the feeling of length is enhanced by the electric sun blind in particular. As a result, the rear trim of the panoramic roof in the 207 Touring is at 25° in relation to the vertical of the rear passengers' eyes compared with 45° in the 207 hatchback, offering them an even greater experience of the glazed areas of the vehicle. Also, the meticulous choice of the different tints and characteristics of the different layers of glass ensures excellent performance, with a thermal heat transmission of just 14% while maintaining a light transmission of 22% at the same time.

Consequently, the 1.106 m2 of glass dispenses a very pleasant brightness, which can be partly or completely adjusted (in 10 seconds) by means of the electric sun blind. The two parts of the sunblind slide individually and are superimposed on each other at the rear of the roof. They are controlled by an electric motor mounted on the rear cross member. The motor is controlled by a switch located on the centre console, near the hand brake, to make it accessible to both the front and rear seat occupants.

Thanks to the overall design, and depending on the position of the sun blind, it also assists in reducing the interior noise levels. With its greater width, in order to take full advantage of the light distribution, the panoramic roof is also combined with stylish aluminium longitudinal roof bars.

Original roof bars

Constructed from aluminium, they are located on mountings made from 30% glass-fibre reinforced thermoplastic. They will support a load of 75 kg and their security and resistance to impact have been assessed via special tests. Optional quick-fitting cross bars and anti-theft locks can be installed without any problem.

A versatile rear tailgate

The finishing touch to the back of the 207 Touring, it gives access to the luggage space in two ways:

  • The tailgate glass with its visible hinges can be opened independently of the tailgate. This feature is operated by means of a dedicated release button, next to the one for opening the tailgate, from which it is distinguished by the different exterior finish, giving it a different feel. The glass can also be opened independently by means of the 3rd button on the HF remote control plip, which then releases the tailgate glass. The opening tailgate glass is tinted in the same style as the rear quarter panel "trims", which extend either side of it.

Access to the rear compartment via the rear tailgate glass allows:

  • clothing to be placed on the parcel shelf without disturbing the contents of the boot.
  • loading to be completed or baggage to be removed without disturbing other items.

A magic modularity in the back

The rear seats benefits from a clever folding mechanism that allows the rear seat backs complete with head restraints, to be folded down against the rear seat squabs with just one hand. The seats also fold into the boot floor, providing a perfectly flat extended load area.

The operation of the mechanism with invisible linkages and parallelograms has been the subject of several patent applications. It is activated by means of the seat releases located on the top of the backrests and accessible from the rear doors or from the boot.

These seats are split 2/3: 1/3 for maximum modularity. With the 2/3 side on the left, this arrangement allows long items to be transported if necessary, while still accommodating four passengers.
The rear seat is made from compact, high density foam contained within the cloth seat trims. The seats are produced by using the "in situ" method.

To improve comfort in use, the 2/3 side, which accommodates the central safety belt and weighs 13 kg, has an invisible damper to cushion the folding motion of the backrest and assist with raising it again.

With the same desire for practicality, the double buckle of the central safety belt is mounted on a curved cable embedded in the padding. After use, it is stowed in the 2/3 seat padding, which means it can be found easily, does not affect the mechanism and, last but not least, does not affect comfort. This system has three individual patents.

Naturally, the "magic" modularity of the 207 Touring rear seats can be combined with those of the luggage compartment if necessary, when it then offers a loading length of up to a maximum of 1.70 metres.

For this purpose, the back of the backrest is covered entirely with a bonded moquette fabric and equipped with five plastic load support rails, which extend those on the boot floor.

Once the seats are folded, a continuous flat surface is created without any raised portion or recesses, thanks to the specific 3° compensation of the boot floor and a flexible trim.

A clever rear parcel shelf

The rear parcel shelf consists of three rigid flaps resting on injection-moulded side supports.

Its clever design allows multiple uses in connection with the contents of the boot:

  • it conceals them completely from the outside
  • it allows easy access from the rear seats thanks to the handle used to fold the first flap
  • it allows easy access to it simply by opening the tailgate glass. A simple and practical reinforced fabric strap is used to fold back the last two flaps and close them again.
  • If a very bulky load is being transported, the shelf is easy to stow, folded or not, at the bottom of the boot, where it will withstand a weight of 100 kg. It can also be stowed vertically behind the front seats.

When in place, it matches the upper surface of the baggage compartment perfectly. By also acting as a noise suppression barrier, it helps the acoustic comfort in the vehicle.

The movable flaps are made from glass fibre reinforced polypropylene in order to combine lightness and strength and are covered with a needle felt on top and a non-woven fabric, together with a layer of acoustic felt underneath.

Space and easy luggage handling

The boot is a simple design with a tapered lower section measuring 548 mm, whose maximum width of 1060 mm and height of 795 mm under the roof makes loading the vehicle as easy as possible.

The boot is carpeted throughout and offers numerous clever touches and features:

  • enclosed storage in the right hand boot trim (1.7 litres).
  • six locating rings distributed over the floor and on the back of the rear seats
  • two hooks to suspend plastic bags, located on the parcel shelf supports
  • a luggage net (depending on the version), which can be installed in a number of ways
  • a fuel can net behind the right-hand wheel arch boot trim
  • an elastic retaining strap on the left

The boot carpet, on which the load support rails are located, is made from compacted wood covered with moquette. It is equipped with two support cords, to retain the carpet in a raised position.

The following are stored under the boot carpet:

  • in the spare wheel well, the 15" space saver spare wheel
  • above this, a large compartmentalised polystyrene box to accommodate the jack, but also providing additional storage space (21 litres)

All in all, the storage volume is 428 litres.
With the rear seats folded down, the total volume up to the roof is 1433 litres.

In order to make full and safe use of the Touring loading capacity up to the roof, a rear heavy duty luggage net, is available as an option. It can be anchored in place either behind the front seats when the rear seats are folded down or behind the rear seats.

For this purpose, four location points hidden behind injection-moulded flaps, allow the net to be fixed at the top. At the bottom, the net is anchored on the third Isofix rear seat mounting points.

Driving aids

As in the hatchback, a number of driving aids are available:

  • Cruise control with speed limiter (option)
  • automatic illumination of the headlamps (standard)
  • automatic windscreen wipers with rain sensor (standard)
  • reverse parking aid (option)

Like on all the 207s, the large exterior rear-view mirrors and the flat-blade windscreen wipers improve both front and rear vision, which is so important for comfort and safety.

Life on board

Exceptional brightness

A forward position windscreen, low side window height, small fixed windows, panoramic glass roof all create a glazed surface area of 4.407 metres. These sources of light bathe the passenger compartment and emphasise the interior space.

Well designed thermal comfort

With efficient multiple distribution air vents, two for the rear passengers, a "pollen" filter on all versions, the 207 Touring provides a high quality of air distribution.

All 207 Touring versions are fitted with air conditioning as standard, which can be upgraded to the optional dual zone digital air conditioning and climate control system.

With this system the driver and the passenger can set their own temperature independently. The controls have been adapted to the interior volume of this new silhouette and the fitment of the glass panoramic roof. As in the hatchback, the "sunshine" sensor manages the difference between passing through strong sunlight to travelling through a tunnel. Particularly respectful of passenger comfort, the system automatically isolates the passenger compartment if the screen washers are activated in order to block the odour from the screen wash. It is also combined with an activated carbon filter, which traps hydrocarbon odours and certain pollutant gas molecules.

The glove box contains a controllable air-conditioning duct and can also be used to keep items cool, such as canned drinks….

The acoustic environment

Acoustic comfort has been the subject of a great deal of study – filtering engine noise, specifying the seals and the profile of the roof bars to limit wind noise and the use of absorbent materials to reduce the noise from the back of the vehicle.

At the same time, the 207 Touring demonstrates good suppression of body vibrations, resulting in particular from the large rear double aperture and its affect in ensuring excellent body rigidity.

The combination of these features means that full advantage can be taken of the in-car-entertainment system developed for the 207 Touring.

An RD4 six speaker radio CD system with a power of 4 x 15 W with a single-tuner is fitted as standard and is compatible with CDs using the MP3 file format.

An optional five-CD auto-changer, installed in the centre fascia panel, is available as an option.

The 207 Touring range

The 207 Touring is available in the XT specifications as on the hatch back range.

It also has a very comprehensive safety specification:

  • six airbags,
  • fasten safety belt warning system,
  • five adjustable head restraints,
  • Isofix rear seat mountings,
  • ABS,
  • electronic braking force distribution (EBFD),
  • emergency brake assist (EBA)
  • and automatic illumination of the hazard warning lights.

It also features:

  • Leather steering wheel / gear knob,
  • White instrument dials,
  • Chrome interior door handles,
