Global SUV manufacturer HAVAL is set to deliver a knock-out punch when it launches in New Zealand later this year.
China's number one selling SUV will go on sale in August, but has already thrown its support behind New Zealand's own world heavyweight champion Joseph Parker.
This was confirmed yesterday when HAVAL and sister brand Great Wall Motors were announced as main sponsors for Parker's first title defence against Romanian contender Razvan 'Bigfoot' Cojanu.
With an expected global broadcast audience of more than 100 million people, Parker vs Cojanu will be the biggest boxing event ever staged in this country.
HAVAL New Zealand Chief Marketing Officer Tim Smith said it was a red-letter day for the company.
"We are excited to be in the corner supporting New Zealand champion Joseph Parker, and be a part of history as the country hosts its first world heavyweight title event.
"The SUV market continues to grow in New Zealand and we are confident the HAVAL range can be a key player here.
"While other manufacturers are spreading their talents across a wide range of vehicles and platforms, HAVAL is focusing and specialising. Specialising in the fastest growing automotive sector in the world," said Smith.
"Since the launch of our first SUV in China in 2002, HAVAL has become the No.1 SUV manufacturer in the world's largest automobile market and has been the top-selling SUV brand in China for 15 consecutive years.
"We sold more than one million vehicles in 2016 and have been named the world's most powerful SUV brand by leading business valuation firm Brand Finance," said Smith.
HAVAL will launch the compact H2 and medium-sized H6 models, with dealerships around the country. The all-new 7-seat HAVAL H7 will follow shortly after.
Parker thrilled New Zealand sporting fans last year when he became the first kiwi to win a heavyweight boxing crown.
However, he faces tough competition on May 6 in his first title defence as he attempts to maintain his undefeated record (22 – 0) and cement his status.
The 202cm Cojanu arrives with strong credentials having made his pro debut in 2011 after more than 300 amateur fights.
The fight will be held at Vodafone Events Centre in Manukau on May 6.
