With $11.2 million achieved in sales, including a record $2,000,500 paid for the NSW black and white Heritage number plate '28' and strong auction prices paid for many vehicles, Shannons Timed Online Winter Auction continued the buoyant trend of the company's previous online auctions since COVID quashed showroom events.

A 1923 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost 40/50 HP 'Park Ward' Saloon offered from a deceased estate was right on expectation; a 1934 20-25HP Rolls-Royce offered in 'Project condition' sold for $60,000 – double its anticipated result – with a glorious, fully-restored 1928 Auburn 8-115 Boat Tail Speedster with a bespoke flat head eight cylinder engine also finding a new owner.

Other standout results included the $295,000 paid after 38 bids for a one-family-owned and well-preserved 1971 Ford Falcon XYGT manual sedan presented in original, unrestored condition, while the $48,600 paid for a humble 1981 Mini Moke Californian after 60 bids was a believed auction record.

Another top auction result was the $245,000 achieved by a rare and powerful Italian GT icon – a shapely 1985 De Tomaso Pantera GTS/GT5 coupe.

As is usual at Shannons auctions, numeric black and white number plates were in high demand, with the tightly-held and exceptionally-rare NSW double-digit plate '28' bringing a double-digit record $2,000,500 and '606' selling for $370,500 after a 44 feverish bids, while amongst the early Victorian plates the stars were '530' at $466,500, '8-181' at $345,000 and '6-996' at $307,500 while the top-selling Queensland plate sale was $156,000 for '246'.

The standout results were achieved by Japanese Kawasakis, with a 1973 H2A 750cc selling for $29,000; a 1975 Z1 900cc bringing $27,222 and a similar Z1 900cc motorcycle in 'Project condition' going for $29,500. Amongst the Americans, a 1934 Indian Scout 45 Solo 750cc sold for $56,000 and a 1972 Norton 750 Commando was the best of the British motorcycles at $25,500.

Two very desirable 1981 Mike Hailwood replica Ducati 900cc sports motorcycles also sold for $34,000 and $36,501 respectively.

Amongst the many outstanding classic vehicle sales:

  • a 1958 Holden FC Special sedan sold for $66,500 after 26 bids;
  • a 1964 Jaguar Mk 2 saloon enhanced with a 4.2 litre engine and other modifications, brought $87,500;
  • a 1974 Ford XB Fairmont 4.9 litre sedan with GS options sold for $72,000
  • a beautiful red and restored 1969 Alfa Roneo 1750 GTV Series 1 coupe also found a new owner.

Results for home-grown heroes included a restored 1971 Falcon XY GT-HO Phase III that was in demand with 57 bids before selling for $488,888; a 1970 Ford Falcon XW GT 'automatic' sedan sold for $120,000, a 1990 HSV VN Commodore Group A SS sedan brought $150,500; while a 1985 HDT VK SS Commodore made $191,500; a 1971 Falcon XYGT manual sedan achieved $295,000 after 38 bids and  a Holden Torana LX 'SS recreation' V8 Hatchback realised $88.000.

As expected, a 1982 Mazda RX7 Series 2 coupe by Sydney-based social media influencers and specialists Mighty Car Mods, sold for well above its pre-auction estimate for an excellent $48,100. In another strong result for a performance car, a sought-after circa 2001 Roaring Forties GT40 Replica coupe wrapped in the famous Gulf track livery brought $135,500.

American Muscle Cars also had a strong following, with a left hand drive 1970 Plymouth Barracuda 440 '6-Pack' coupe selling for $93,000;  a 1964 Pontiac Tempest  GTO hardtop went for $73,000, while for vintage enthusiasts a rare right hand drive 1919 Cadillac Type 57 Sedan with an interesting history sold for $38,696.

In some strong results for affordable classics, a  Morris Minor 1000 Series 2 sedan that would make a great club car sold for $11,000; a well-preserved and iconic 1954 Morris J Type van made $31,536; a shapely, restored Lancia Beta 1800 Coupe sold for $25,500 and a  two-owner 1969 Toyota KE10 Corolla Coupe showing just 95,212 km on its odometer at the time of cataloguing brought an impressive $21,780.
