• Near new, low km, 1999 Subaru WRX STi Coupe
  • Thundering Robnell 'Cobra' prototype
  • Uber-rare and exciting BMW M3 EVO 2

Shannons has a range of modern performance classics to tempt enthusiasts in its upcoming Melbourne Summer Auction on December 9.

Very attractive for Subaru WRX enthusiasts is a superb, Bundaberg, Qld. delivered 1999 STi Coupe with just 18,643km showing on its odometer, believed genuine.

This highly desirable World Rally Championship homologation special is one of only 399 delivered in Australia and presents in superb condition. With little use in the hands of its two owners, it is expected to sell in the $60,000-$80,000 range.

Offering similar performance, but enormously appealing to those who have ever dreamed of owning a Cobra roadster, Shannons has the next best thing: the original Robnell 'Cobra' convertible (Build No XO1) fitted with a 5.0 litre Ford V8 engine

Featuring a fibreglass/Kevlar body, the only lift-off hardtop every built for a Robnell, Halibrand-style alloy wheels, working side exhaust pipes, a chrome rollbar, polished bullet exterior mirror, a quick-release aero-style fuel filler, and chrome nudge bars front and rear, this well-known Robnell is a real head-turner.

Inside the tan leather cockpit, you'll find a Nardi steering wheel and full instrumentation. With just 12,000km showing on its odometer at the time of cataloguing, this ultimate 'feel good' modern classic presses all the right 'Cobra' buttons and is expected to sell well below its build cost, in the $80,000-$90,000 range.

For similar money you could have what many enthusiasts believe is the ultimate BMW M3 Coupe – a right hand drive 1988 E30 M3 EVO 2 version of the legendary original E30 M3.

Number 264 of just 500 built, this privately imported M3 was converted locally to right hand drive while being refurbished throughout and presents very well.

Ready to be enjoyed by keen drivers, it is expected to sell in the $70,000 - $90,000 range.

If Australian Muscle Cars are more appealing, the 2006 Holden HSV GTO VZ Coupe with just 4,915km from new showing on is odometer will be equally appealing in the same price range.

Those looking for an affordable high-performance German sports roadster that looks as good today as when it was built in 1993, it's hard to go past the silver Mercedes-Benz SL600 Roadster in the auction.

With its all-alloy DOHC 6.0 litre V12 engine developing 286kW, mated to a driver-adaptive five-speed transmission and with a sophisticated independent suspension system with adaptive shock absorbers, the SL600 was premium-priced when new in Australia at $351,705, ensuring its exclusivity.

With an indicated 140,313km showing on its odometer, the SL600 is expected to sell for the relative bargain price of $35,000-$40,000.

Another appealing Mercedes-Benz sports roadster in the auction is an immaculate 1987 US-delivered 5.5 litre alloy V8-engined 560SL that is presented in great condition and is expected to sell in the $30,000-$40,000 range – around half its Australian equivalent.

For buyers looking for the special cachet of the famous Maserati nameplate at a very affordable price, there is a 1988 Zagato-bodied V6 Biturbo 2.8 Spyder that comes to auction from a deceased estate, ripe for refurbishment - mainly its interior.

Offered with 'no reserve' and expected to sell in the $8,000-$12,000 range, it represents a great opportunity for the enthusiast looking for the satisfaction of resurrecting a car that deserves a better future.

For similar money and also with 'no reserve', there is rare, three-owner 1995 Toyota MR2 Targa 'Bathurst Edition' Coupe that is expected to bring $10,000-$15,000.

An interesting performance alternative is a left hand drive 1988 'Greenwood Enhanced) Chevrolet Corvette C4 roadster that is offered with 'no reserve' and is expected to sell in the $15,000-$20,000 range.
