Due to an overwhelming amount of interest from BMW riders, the organisers of the 2007 Heroes Legend ride from Paris to Dakar have just announced details of a new 'open' category that will allow riders of all off-road BMW models to participate in the event, which starts next March.

Originally, the Heroes Legend was only open to 'classic' two-valve BMW GS models built between 1980 and 1996. However, the new 'open' class will allow riders to enter on BMW machines such as the F 650 GS Dakar; R 1200 GS and GS Adventure; HP2 Enduro and potentially even the new G 650 Xchallenge Hard Enduro.

This is great news for BMW owners with an appetite for adventure and a dream of discovering Africa. The principle of the Heroes Legend is simple: to give all fans of Africa and the Dakar the opportunity to compete in a Paris-Dakar rally raid in the best possible conditions: assistance by a professional, experienced team of organisers and the chance to ride more than 6,000 kilometres of roads and desert trails from Paris, France, all the way to the Lac Rose in Dakar.

A typical team line-up will consist of one bike, one 4X4 for assistance, and three participants, who can ride the bike in turn. With a couple of timed sections every day, as well as stages of a maximum of 500 km (200-300 km off-road) this formula offers everyone the chance to make it to the bivouac before dark each day.

After a symbolic start under the Eiffel Tower, the competitors will ride south and participate in a special stage in the south of France and another one in Spain before sailing to Morocco. They will ride across this wonderful country, heading in the direction of Mauritania and then Senegal.

The rally takes place from 1 to 17 March 2007 and registration is open now, although limited to just 80 teams. For more information about how to enter, please visit the www.heroeslegend.com website.
