Suzuki Previews Fuel Cells At Melbourne

Suzuki will give Melbourne a glimpse of future fuel cell and vehicle control technology when the Melbourne International Motor Show opens on 2 March.

Its futuristic Ionis concept car is powered by a fuel cell and features sophisticated drive-by-wire control systems in a sleek, futuristic body.

Ionis converts hydrogen into electricity to drive this compact but spacious commuter while emitting nothing but water vapour.

Although not intended for production, Ionis gives a glimpse of where Suzuki might soon be heading with eco-friendly production vehicles.

Its brakes, throttle and steering all feature drive-by-wire technology which allows the controls to be positioned for maximum interior space efficiency.

Combined with the space-saving, under-floor fuel cell installation, this allows Ionis to seat four adults in unusual comfort for such a small car.

Four large sliding doors make for easy access to a cabin that is as luxurious as it is modern, with dark brown leather seats, wooden floors, ebony and metal trims and LED lighting.

Clever technology is also applied to an in-car entertainment system that allows passengers to download music via wireless Internet access and to watch satellite TV.

Ionis will be displayed beside Suzuki's new sport crossover vehicle, the SX4, which has won widespread acclaim since its launch onto the Australian market.

SX4 is one of the stars of Suzuki's range of automobiles and sport/utilities that account for sales of more than 2.1 million vehicles a year in 123 countries.

Melbourne International Motor Show runs from 2 to 12 March at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre, and is organised and promoted by the Victorian Automobile Chamber of Commerce through its dealer division the Australian Automobile Dealers Association (Vic).
